stealing from a TTRPG podcast, “draw maps but leave blank spaces”. there’s a lot that I decide but it depends on the step and I try to not lock in absolutely everything early on so I still have a little wiggle room for playing around with the piece

I've really been digging into how to make digital feel more tactile like trad, and this has been part of it - there's a stickiness that working analogue has and it's so easy to end up in a very *polished* place with digital art. learning and unlearning 🙂 it's fun!

until it all feels right! basically working with analogue paints the last few months has been a big, big influence on how I'm thinking about color when painting digitally, and then doing these as speedpaints forces me to streamline and not spend ages making tiny adjustments to find perfection lol

-just a tiny, tiny bit, so the orange/yellow underpainting influences the colors a little bit and helps unify them, similar to how you would w/ mixing paint! and then from there it's a mix of selecting stuff off the picker wheel, adjustment layers ("soft light" has been a big one), and tweaking

and then add some very rough values over that, then a fresh layer where I eyeball colors from the character reference. i'm not using the eyedropper At All on these, all of them are me grabbing colors in relation to what's already down! from there, I tend to take that layer and lower the opacity-

first off THANK YOUUUU that is so sweet!! colors definitely depend on what it is I'm doing, but *lately* a lot of the process has been influenced by working with analogue paints and learning how different colors mix together; for these speedpaints, I start with a base layer of mottled orange/yellow-

yeah i’m mainly thinking about it in the context of being a digital painting art box that’s better priced than a mac studio. I don’t do pretty much any 3d work so I’m not worried about that end as much as “could I shove thirty layers into a 300 dpi poster-sized file without it dying”
