The 2013 game has been completely redone to fit my current vision of traditional arcade game design. It's denser (more levels but less overall length), with better pacing, mechanics and a proper scoring system.

a major issue with video games is that they produce a bunch of people who consider themselves brain geniuses for solving problems that were designed to be solvable. as a remedy, we should be making more games that are actively and irreconcilably hostile to the player. thank you

trying to pick up knowledge from specialized fields without the benefit of a formal education is really strange because all the information is out there, somewhere, and you probably do actually have useful intuitions for how it's structured, but you learn the names for things in the 'wrong' order.

This. For me, fine tuning is what makes an arcade game good even after decades
To me, "tuning" describes the tweaking of numbers and other design dials to create the desired game dynamics. And it feels like fully 50% of my job as a game designer. It just feels so critical. I've had prototypes where the system itself appeared to be a failure but the issue was actually tuning.
