Last year, the United States sold more educational services to the rest of the world than it sold in natural gas and coal combined.

A thread on public defense, trial practice, and my frustration with Congressional Democrats.

I was a public defender for years. A big part of the job is eating shit from judges, prosecutors, cops, clients, everyone, and I ate a LOT of shit as a result. 1/11

as long as journalists and pundits act as if they are amateur political strategists & not people trying to understand and tell the truth about the world, they are going to take the implicit view that voters can never be wrong, which then demands endless explanation of their morally blameless choice

The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Higher-ed folks: looking for a good first day of class activity? I want to lift up the demo/activity in this recent piece by David Bowne, which I think is brilliant. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/care...
Engaging students in their education on the first class day (opinion)
The first day of class sets the tone for the entire semester, writes David R. Bowne, who has developed an unusual yet successful way to do so—with M&Ms.

So Ole and Lena got married in Mankato and started driving up to the Twin Cities. Feeling affectionate, Ole put a hand on Lena's knee. Lena said, "Oh Ole, we're married now, you can go further."

So Ole drove all the way to Duluth.
Uh oh Don Jr is on the case of a Minnesota Lutheran being awkward about public displays of affection, sure sounds nefarious

One of the best bits of wisdom I’ve taken about writing is that you write the first draft to explain it to yourself and then a second to explain it to others.

They skip all that and make sure no one understands anything.
Altman, as usual, fundamentally misunderstands the purpose and process of writing. It’s not merely to produce a text. It’s to work through your thinking and commit to it. Or as Jane Rosenweig (Director of the Writing Center at Harvard College) put it:

I'm working on policy proposals to protect consumer rights when companies brick smart devices. So please share devices that you've owned that stopped working because the company that made it killed software support or went out of business. Also, please share this request.

Thank you.
