But shall this crazed old man be tamely suffered to drag a whole ship’s company down to doom with him?

Someone in my small town traded his mint 5 year old 200 series Land Cruiser for a new 250 series hybrid. I wonder how many times a day he regrets that choice?

Isn’t it weird that when interest rates fall it takes approximately 3 minutes for that cut to be made to anything paying me interest? But it takes weeks, months or never for that cut in rates to affect accounts where I’m paying interest.

I feel like Webster Bank needs to keep searching for a director of solution architecture for another 18 months and then I’m sure they’ll find a person with all the shopping list of skills, willingness to drive to an office and accept 50% below market rate. Job’s been open since December 2023!

Texas Roadhouse is now apparently the #1 restaurant chain in the US (taking over from Olive Garden). Checking the menu there are precisely zero vegetarian options for entrees (side salad doesn’t count). So that’s awesome…. 😑

Might frame this quote from this wonderful thread:

"Most (good) solutions are proposed not by newcomers, but by people who understand an issue deeply.

There are exceptions, of course, but generally, if a solution seems "obvious", it's because you don't understand the problem as well as you think"
One of Silicon Valley's foundational myths is that newcomers to a field are uniquely equipped to solve its problems because they're not weighed down by biases and habits that make "experts" overlook obvious solutions.

"The most dangerous phrase in the language is: We've always done it this way." 🧵

In the latest version of enshittification of apps, the almost 1GB Samsung “smart things” app fails to function at all if you have any kind of privacy protection on your devices or network. Recent reviews are universally 1 and 2 stars but the average is still showing as 4.6.

Living in an old house is the gift that keeps on giving. After specially ordering 27” wide appliances to fit through our 27.25” wide doorways I find that they are in fact 26.8” wide at the bottom. Lovely.

Almost funny to read this. Most of the people I know who have retired early (including me) have done so because ageism in industry makes us unemployable. I’d love to work for a few more years but employers bin my CV immediately when they work out my age.

Today I learned that the Great Wall Tank 300 SUV has the same 8spd ZF transmission as my Land Rover Defender. Just in case you were wondering how quickly Chinese vehicles are catching up to the rest of the world.

HMRC in the UK currently taking 2+ months (???) to respond to letters. 3+ hours to talk to someone on the phone, which is *always* the wrong department. No way to contact them online. Maybe I should send a telegram or carrier pigeon? Is this really 2025?

Maybe electing / appointing people who are really conservatives to be the leader of the Labour Party is not a great idea after all. And the ratchet of the Overton Window moves ever further rightward…
