This is a 100% game breaker for my enjoyment of RPGs, and it is *remarkable* how many otherwise excellent games it renders unplayable for me.
Person: this is a very important and time-critical task. it needs to be done as soon as humanly possible
Me, wise to video game design: I understand, it will be the last thing on my list to do, once I have exhausted literally every other available option, either implied or explicit

For my sins, I want to make some changes to how Ubuntu packages build, which means I'm poking around `debhelper`, which means I'm interacting with Perl, and woah, boy, is that not a task for being tired and bored in an airport lounge.

“You should be able to talk to your PC, have it understand you, and then be able to have magic happen from that,” says Mehdi.

Yeah, the problem in one simple advertising-speak package, isn't it. No one actually *wants* magic - capricious, dangerous - they want *technology* - reliable, dependable.
AI people keep showing up in my mentions to argue that I am not using their specific narrow definition of AI agents while the industry keeps promising magic computers that can listen and take consistent, reliable actions on arbitrary voice commands www.theverge.com/news/799768/...
Microsoft wants you to talk to your PC and let AI control it

It is frankly uncalled for rudeness on human biology's part that one way to get a sore back is to lie down all day.

Even detaching this from the “state monopoly on violence” frame, “policing” is a task that *needs to be done* in a community of any size - community norms need to be enforced.

In online communities, we often call this “moderation” rather than policing, but that is the task.
“Agent of the government empowered to use violence in its name to enforce its laws” is a pretty old invention, actually. This is what I’m talking about, this is just like magical thinking: you need *someone* to maintain and exercise the state’s monopoly on force. It’s literally unavoidable, sorry!
“we should simply not have cops” is a good solution tho. policing as a concept is a very recent invention in human history

The politics of humiliation has moved to the center of the reactionary project under Trump II.

Last 12 hours and this bundle has outperformed just about everyone’s wildest dreams.

One person in the bundle commented about how the money they’re getting could cover rent on a modest apartment for 8-9 months

This is the kind of impact y’all have made. Thank you so much ❤️

My political take is that this is the ur-issue that left-wing politics in (at least) the Anglozone needs to deal with, the single biggest blocker to political success: lots of people have an experience of the world that is barely connected to their objective material conditions.
this is an embarrassing thing for this guy to say in public but also touches on something that constantly rankles me, which is the vague idea of "feeling unsafe" as a problem that someone else needs to solve for you regardless of whether you are actually unsafe or not

Voted early this year as I'm travelling tomorrow.

First time I could vote above the line in the Senate, because I didn't have to put that POS Eric Abetz last.

This!
And it's not limited to indies...

A lot of people across video games are spending a lot of time building content they know will be discarded because somebody in the decision making process can't visualise the final product without "final quality" assets.
something people don't talk much about in this era of "publishers expecting a near-finished game before investing" is

games are being made sub-optimally in order to speed-run vertical slices/convincing demos

instead of finalising systems then building content, you have to make content alongside 1/

This may well be the most perfectly targetted sequence of words possible to engage my interest.
Wrote a bit about Heart of the Machine which should be up on PC Gamer soonish, but I'll need MANY more hours sunk into this just to get a feel for its limits.

Arcen Games (primarily Chris Park, galaxy-brain dev) have always aimed high, but this might be their Dwarf Fortress/Caves of Qud opus.
Having a poke around Heart Of The Machine for my next impressions piece and... I think it might be something special.

It's ilke Crusader Kings for the speculative sci-fi crowd. Roleplaying 4X grand strategy where you start out as a single rogue android in a cyberpunk dystopia and go from there.

Breathless reporting about Bitcoin is a great example of how the abstractions of economics have consumed popular understanding of the actual topic.

Bitcoin is an apotheosis of the stock market, discarding the remnant of social utility that the stock market possesses in favour of pure abstraction.
