Roman glass cup signed by master glassmaker ‘Ennion’. AD 30-70.
Ennion was the first glassworker to ‘brand’ his work some 2,000 years ago, by incorporating his name into the mould’s design.

![My photo shows a translucent yellowy-green glass cup with a small loop handle. It originally had two handles but one is missing. It has a cylindrical body with vertical sides and some chips in the rim. The body of the cup is decorated with a plain band below the rim, above two horizontal friezes in relief. The upper frieze is bound above and below by a fine raised line and contains two Greek inscriptions, one on each side of the cup. My photo shows the side of the cup with the Greek inscription ENNIWN/EΠOIH/CEN / Ennion made [me/it] inside a Roman-type frame known as a ‘tabula ansata’. The lower frieze has close-set vertical flutes which are rounded at both ends. The underside of the body and foot have a lattice pattern which can be seen reflected in the glass of the display case. This is a swimming sea slug. This type of slug, called a dendronotus nudibranch, can grow nearly a foot long in the Vancouver area where this was filmed. While they're often found on the seafloor, they can also fold their bodies to drift with ocean currents
