If you haven't seen it yet, Survivor currently has its first openly Autistic cast member. Big episode for Eva last night. Some problematic internalized ableism, but generally still great to see the representation. It's on Paramount+ for those wanting to catch the whole season. #survivor #survivor48

Fantastic commentary. Also puts things in perspective when you're sad, wondering if your life would have been better had you been diagnosed earlier, had your parents known when you were a child and gotten you support. Not always....

Usually the latter 🙃
It’s fun starting a new hobby with ADHD because I never know if I’ve found a new lifelong passion or if I’m going to spend $2000 on stuff and immediately lose all interest

I think we've all been in this situation. At first, NTs try to be our friend. Eventually though, our mask slips....

This 👇 the first thing I did upon diagnosis at age 40 was apologize to myself for hating myself so deeply. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't fit in, and I absolutely detested myself for it. After diagnosis, I refused to continue abusing myself for my autistic traits. It's been a journey...
When I finally made the deep discovery that I’m autistic, I asked my husband if he thought people would’ve been more understanding and patient with me had they known. He shook his head no, and that killed me. I said, well maybe I would’ve been more understanding and patient with myself. *cue crying*

Yes, we can be invaluable assets to the right employers, identifying solutions and opportunities that others simply can't see.
You don't hire autistic people so you can tell them what to do. You hire autistic people so they can tell you, wild-eyed and exhausted, what they found down the rabbit hole they stumbled down in the course of their normal work

Hi! For a @motherjones.com piece, looking to briefly talk to someone who receives care through Home Based Community Services Waiver–including any concerns you have on the program due to changes to Medicaid. My email to get in touch is jmetraux@motherjones.com (or Dm me!). Reposts appreciated.

Excellent presentation of the ADHD experience. I'm to the point that it's a bit traumatic to see my handwritten notes because I know that my well intentioned plans went nowhere.

Great reminder about autistic representation and why we need to come together, regardless of experience, rather than tear each other apart.

Ben VanHook is a tireless advocate for the Autistic and neurodivergent communities. I met him on LinkedIn a couple years back. He’s a great dude, now in crisis, who needs help.

I prob wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now if it weeent for Ben and a few others in our community advocating on LinkedIn

Excellent explanation of why self ID is valid.
In answer to a message I received on here (screenshot at the end)…

Yes, it IS valid to self-ID in my opinion 🧵

Why:

1. Not everyone has the privilege of being able to access #autism diagnosis. The wait for formal assessment can be several months (unlikely!) to 18 YEARS

For those looking for autistic creator's who are dealing with issues more reflective of those with higher support needs, I highly recommend Twyla's channel. She's level 2 and is currently homeless for the second time in a year. Please support her channel💛

It is not fighting battles nobody knows about for me.

Autistic me is fighting battles that everybody knows about because I can't stop oversharing them.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but here I go. I am really tired of the hate late identified autistics get within the community. For many late identified autistics, we suffered for years, decades even, without support, not understanding what was happening. I can't overstate how traumatic this was. 1/5

Excellent explanation of meltdowns. Personally, I'm generally good as long as I manage stress levels and get good sleep. If I'm overly tired, my ability to mask and manage my emotions can disappear.

So true. I was in an appointment getting my BPD diagnosis when a chance conversation with my provider made her realize it was autism instead.

Sigh...life with ADHD...and cPTSD/depression. 3 hours sleep last night, 6 hours (and counting down) tonight. Tomorrow's an opportunity to do better....
Stages of trying to sleep:

I can get 8 hours
I can still get 7 hours
I can still get 6 hours
I can still get 5 hours
I can still get 4 hours
I can still get 3 hours
I can still get 2 hours
I can still get 1 hour
*falls asleep for 5 minutes*
*alarm goes off *

Words matter 💛
Autistic Lexicon

Autism Community vs. Autistic Community.

The *Autistic* Community is inclusive of anyone who is Autistic (with a diagnosis of ASD or not)

The *Autism* Community is arguably anyone/anything that has any connection to Autism and is a much larger.
