For me, it usually happens after. I scoop it and forget to put it away. Or my favorite, I put it in the refrigerator 🤦

things. However, I do think words really matter. Sorry for the essay.

including double empathy, internalized ableism, and medical bias. So double empathy was just a small component of their findings. Yet the name triple empathy implies a direct correlation or expansion of the theory. I think it detracts from the DEP. Again, I'm just one opinion and I tend to overthink

to describe autistic experiences to describe their (non autistic) experiences. I started getting prickly about this when I learned about "triple empathy". It was a study about autistics and their medical treatment. It noted a number of issues were impacting their care (most not specific to autism)

language to be able to explain this phenomenon. It helps us advocate. Otherwise, we'll just get "oh, everyone is misunderstood sometimes" (i.e. "everyone's a little autistic). We need to be able to say "no, this is different." And that's hard to do if we're allowing NTs to use language intended

increasingly investigating topics relevant to the autistic community (rather than prioritizing doctors trying to "treat" us or parents overwhelmed by us). Not trying to gatekeep, but this is why I get heartburn when DE is used outside its original context. It's just so important that we have

(and will always fail in some ways) if they want any level of acceptance. So the DE theory recognizing that autistic perspective was equally valid was tremendously important to the community. Research also really started to pivot around this time, including autistic individuals on research teams and

"everyone has different perspectives" as it was society believes one perspective is correct and the other perspective is not valid and will not be acknowledged or allowed to meaningfully participate in society. Those within the minority perspective must pretend to be part of the majority

it marked a significant shift in the conversation relating to autism and subsequent research. Remember, historically, NT communication was assumed to be superior or "correct" while autistic communication was assumed to be dysfunctional and "wrong." So it was not so much

I guess part of Milton's statements on the topic could be construed that way. However, it's very clearly specific to autism. I believe he has an autistic son, which was the impetus for his research/theory if I remember correctly. It's important because

Sorry if I'm rambling and being pedantic. Perhaps it's my autism 😂 I like that we're creating language and having conversations about our experiences. It's important. I just wish DE was left alone. Sorry 😕

We all have lived experiences that impact how we interact with each other. And there's many autistic experiences that aren't specific to autism (sensory, trauma, anxiety, etc). DE is specific to the autistic neurotype so I don't understand the correlation (in why "double empathy" would be used).

Coining derivative terms compromise the ability to effectively use the term "double empathy" in advocacy as it muddies the waters. Again, maybe I've misunderstood it all along. Not the first time. If I understand the topic of the article, it's speaking to broader experiences.

It essentially implies that we're speaking a different language and is part of the "different not disordered" arguement. Lack of awareness and understanding of this phenomenon causes real issues for our community. As such, I think it's imperative that the DE term stands alone.

Studies relating to double empathy support that NT to NT communication/ability to build rapport is effective and likewise autistic to autistic communication/ability to build rapport is effective. It's only when we mix autistic-NT that effectiveness drops significantly.

I guess I'm unclear whether I understand double empathy as Milton defined it. Perhaps I'm thinking of subsequent studies? Because I was of the understanding that it pertained to how we communicate, both how we process and communicate information and how we recognize/interpret non verbal cues.

Yes! 😂

It's hard because we relate through stories. And sometimes, like I mentioned here, it's fine. I think the real issue is when we compare emotions because they are so situation specific. I try to just say small things like "I'm sorry" to show some care. It's awkward though, I never know what to do.

Not modern, but Fortunate Son by CCR. Too iconic not to be included.

I'm so thankful to have an office. It really helps with burnout and social issues. But yes, before that, I also hid out in my car periodically.
