I’m in a room where a whole ass faculty member said “Chat GPT 5 would be able to write a better NSF proposal than me” and… well…

My inside thoughts got the best of me BC I said loud as fuck “that’s unfortunate, because there’s not a machine on earth that writes better than me.”

Before I turn on @npr.org again or read another @nytimes.com editorial, because I know exactly how it'll be:

This isn't "a threat" to academic freedom. It's not igniting "a debate" about it. The "future" of academic freedom isn't at stake. This is what the end of academic freedom has made possible.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

Here is a plot of 4-year multi-year funded new R01s for 2015-2025. NIH has made some 4-year R01s late in the fiscal year to invest the last of the appropriation, but what is happening this year is quite different.

I estimate that these new R01s are ~25% of the multi-year funding since July 1.

This is a good idea.
How to make teams care: Winner of the NBA Cup gets 5 extra points to use during the regular season. Runner-up gets 2.
Lost by 1? You use two of your points and now you win.
To use the points, the head coach blows into a ram's horn. The coach carries it with him at all times. This is a good idea.

Three months ago I wrote about how there has never been a more important time for private philanthropy to support the junior scientists and invest in maintaining the talent pipeline previously supported by federal funding.

Here's the thread: bsky.app/profile/carl...

But instead:
200 days in, checking in on HHMI funding opportunities:

Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program - not accepting applications

Gilliam Fellows Program - not accepting applications

Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program - not accepting applications

Investigator Program - not accepting applications
This is not some small foundation -- HHMI has a $24 billion endowment. It is the world's 2nd richest biomedical research foundation.

If any funder can double down on their support for science right now, it's HHMI. But they are doing the opposite.

Because of the incredible work of our nation’s scientists, we have our finger tips on the closest thing humanity has ever come to “a cure for cancer”, but brainworm over here doesn’t believe in it.
