How a mag reads through their submission queue is EXTREMELY subjective. It depends on organization-level guidelines and also sometimes even specific readers.

But I can dig deeper into how to we read through the queue at Augur—and why the queue number is mainly aesthetic.

Libraries exist to provide free access to knowledge and community services.

They don't exist to be a mouthpiece of your particular religion or moral code.

We certainly aren't trying to "recruit trans kids" (wtf?).

We aren't out to "attack Christian morals."

We just want to do our jobs.

'25 Peppercorns' is out now with @mythaxis.bsky.social.

This has been a particularly difficult story for me to publish, both personally and in finding a good home for it. It is deeply personal, but it's also political.

Met several readers at Worldcon who were interested in shorter fiction but just didn’t know where to look for it and who/which stories they might like. It definitely feels like there is an audience, but there isn’t a bridge connecting them to the magazines + short fiction authors they’d love.
Publishers are noting a shift in industry mindset around short stories as readers embrace shorter works, with a number feeling like “something is slowly shifting” and that “there’s a real excitement around stories again” 👇 #BookSky

No, I don't want to enable apple intelligence.

No, I don't want chat GPT for Gmail.

No, I don't want an AI summary of my zoom call.

What I want is Clippy to make sarcastic commentary on my rough drafts in real time.

.....wow.
Next year's WorldCon is in Los Angeles, and the theme appears to be Westward Expansion or possibly Manifest Destiny. The guests are referred to as Pioneers and the venue as The Frontier. This year the awards were swept by Indigenous writers. The choice is stunning in its ugliness.

This.

Unfortunately, society rewards success, not bravery.

You're "wasting your life trying to [Do any art]" until you find a measure of success. Then suddenly "you're so brave!"

It's time we reward the bravery to create instead of the "successful" fruits of creation.

Lift each other up.
People say "you're so talented!" when they see garments I've sewn. They don't see my first attempts. The dress that fell apart because I didn't know about finishing seams. The tunic that fell off my shoulders. The sleeves I couldn't raise my arms in.

Failure is the mother of skill.
