"Everyone told magicians in training to at least consider careers in other fields before they went on the job market. 'Alt academia,' they called it, like it was some punk and rebellious lifestyle, like failing at the single thing you'd been trained to do made you cool."
I AM DECEASED. 🪦
If you know me (IRL or on here), you know I...struggle to enjoy things I love a "normal" amount, shall we say. Case in point: I consume a lot (A LOT) of boygenius and Lucy Dacus content on social media. I follow their tours and watch all the video clips I can get my hands on. So. Many. Video clips.

Back in the day the (male) students who hated me sat in the back row, baseball caps pulled down obscuring their faces, and ignored me. Now those same students sit on the front row and glare at me unrelentingly for 75 minutes. I kinda preferred the older model, tbh.

Floating on a teaching high today. As part of the WHAT'S TO BE DONE ABOUT AI?? convo, I've been re-designing my courses and assignments to make them more (for lack of a better term) "AI-proof." Last semester I defaulted to what I knew: old school in-class written exams...

JD Vance is the most loathsome character in American politics, and it's mostly because he's immediately recognizable to anyone with an interest in politics as The Worst Guy From Your PoliSci Class

It's about hierarchy. "Beauty" is subjective, the idea of a black woman portraying the most beautiful woman in the world offends them because white people are supposed to be the most beautiful and it is therefore offensive, it's so straightforwardly racist bsky.app/profile/radl...
The woke scolds are trying to make this about racism. But Musk is right. It's about historical and scientific integrity. When the God of Thunder disguises himself as a swan to seduce and fuck a queen and the resulting baby hatches from an egg, *of course* the baby will be white. It's just science.

Hahahaha, SEND HELP was so fun. Twisty, gory, pitch-black horror comedy. Rachel McAdams was spectacular. This was the Sam Raimi-est Sam Raimi film in years. Loved it.

Shedding a tear watching Catharine O'Hara and cast dancing as a family in the barn party episode at the end of Schitt's Creek s2. Also crying watching her speech celebrating Macaulay Culkin getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And reading his post memorializing her. What a lovely human 💔

For The Ringer, I wrote about how amazing it was that the brilliant Catherine O'Hara finally became a superstar in her 60s, and how sad it is that she was taken from us just when we had all finally begun to appreciate her:
Catherine O’Hara Could Do Anything
And she pretty much did everything. The only tragedy is that it feels like she was just beginning to get the recognition her decades-long career always deserved.

Critic’s Appreciation: How ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Helped Us Celebrate Catherine O’Hara’s Genius (That Was Always There)
From 'SCTV' to Christopher Guest mockumentaries, O'Hara's comic legacy was already secure — but 'Schitt's Creek' allowed viewers to (re)discover a timeless talent.

The entire thread is 🔥 and you should scroll up/down and read it in its entirety, but this bit resonated so hard.
The assumption that all romance is trash for dumb people who like formulas -- that's still a thing in TV & film. A big thing. Also, like, I'm sorry, but a middle or upper class man is an asshole and is doing crimes or solving crimes? That's not a genre? MORE formulaic than a romance? HILARIOUS
