I've been too busy with teaching and school and writing things, but just based on the bits I've caught up on tonight...

Today I submitted a thing, the first writing related thing I've attempted in years. It took a lot work and digging through fuckery to get to this point again. Just being able to write again, to wrap my brain around a story and get into the minds of characters, took an astounding amount of work.

I've looked at all the details of this deal to end the shutdown reached by a small group of Senate Democrats. I've talked to a number of friends on the Hill to see if there's anything I'm missing. Sadly, I am not.

This is a shit deal. It's a betrayal. It's cowardice.

The story of this week is that millions of Americans were told in 2024 their lives would be improved if trans people's lives were made worse and I'm glad they're finally waking up to the fact that was never true to begin with--but trans people's lives are still getting worse

Flew in to San Francisco to meet up with a friend tomorrow and then see Sarah Millican tomorrow night. Ended up at a tavern after checking into my hotel. Honestly, not a bad way to spend Halloween.

Should Mamdani win 🤞🤞🤞I'm begging newly engaged voters to understand that governing is much different than campaigning. Don't become disillusioned bx things take more time/hit more roadblocks than you'd like. That happened to Obama voters in 2009, and that apathy led to the rise of the far right.

SNAP is about to run out, insurance premiums are skyrocketing, and the cost of everything is still rising. And the main priority for the country's leader is a ballroom.
Leavitt: "At this moment in time, of course, the ballroom is really the president's main priority."

The same forces attacking abortion access are attacking gender-affirming care — both rooted in control.

We can’t stop at abortion access. We have to dig injustice out at the root, not just when it touches our own gardens.

Abortion is health care — but it’s also about bodily autonomy, self-determination, and the right to shape our own futures.

Trans people are in a parallel, interconnected fight.

Swearing in isn’t some ceremony. You aren’t a member of Congress until it happens. He knows that.

No phones, no staff, nothing.

I had to escort her into the Capitol on Wed bc Capitol police must treat her as a public visitor until she’s sworn in. And solo visitors aren’t allowed during shutdown!
Johnson: "Grijalva should be working for her constituents right now. I don't know what she's doing. I keep seeing their political stunt videos. She should be in her office. She should be working or in the district for her constituents" (Grijalva is not in fact a Rep. b/c Johnson refuses to seat her)

So they're admitting they are punishing America because some don't want Americans to lose their healthcare. While sending billions to Argentina. Got it.
Vought: "We're gonna keep those RIFs rolling throughout this shutdown ... think the Minority Business Development Agency that divvies up business grants on basis of race. Think Environment Justice at EPA ... "

In twelve days, New Yorkers will begin to cast their ballots and face a stark choice.

A choice between democracy and oligarchy. Between a city you can afford or more of the same. Between the hope of a brighter future or a broken past.

We will choose the future.

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

So this is funny.
The administration just issued a rule slashing foreign agricultural worker wages. And to justify it, in a public filing, Trump's Labor Department alleges that Trump's immigration enforcement has devastated the Ag workforce and caused a "risk of supply shock-induced food shortages."
Trump Labor Department Says His Immigration Raids Are Causing a Food Crisis
In a filing in the Federal Register, the Labor Department argues there are “immediate dangers to the American food supply” due to a lack of migrant agricultural workers.
