hey, do you like cyberpunk but want it to be, like...good?

are you sick of stories going, "Are machines...people???" for 90 minuets and want a movie that goes, "yes" 5 minutes in and then spends the rest of the runtime exploring actually interesting questions?

Do you like ECLIPSE PHASE?

the 'phoenix moons' hypothesis of martian satellites drifting past the roche limit, breaking up, and reforming at smaller sizes is one of those stories that has been well-supported for a while now but makes 'news' every few years anyways. extremely cool to actually have some new evidence this time!
More evidence that Mars has a colorful history. In the past, the Red Planet probably had rings at certain times, and a larger moon (or moons) at others.

In the future, Mars will probably have rings again. 🧪🔭

Daniel Vierge's 1871 drawings of female Communards in Paris for Le Monde illustré, it must have been pretty unsettling to the European powers to see women under arms with red scarves and black flags.

This is an odd way to frame a return to traditional food ways that we ought to celebrate and treat as a chance to reflect on the importance of food sovereignty apnews.com/article/shut...
Tribes that restored buffalo are killing some to feed people because of the shutdown
A deal to end the government shutdown is too late for about 30 bison on the Fort Peck reservation in northern Montana.

This is what I try to always tell people: food banks can do way more with your money than you can, due to bulk buying deals. And they can do way, way more with your money than with the canned goods you didn’t want to eat
spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"

I cringe every time someone pronounces the "Alcubierre" in "Alcubierre Drive" as "Al-koo-bee-air", as if it's a French name

It is named after MIGUEL ALCUBIERRE, he is MEXICAN, the name is SPANISH, it is pronounced "Al-koo-byay-rray"!

The recent Vekllei post about an unarmed navy reminds me how much I like seeing military hardware for civil service. Bombers into weather researchers, APC's using their amphibious assault capabilities to rescue people in storms, nuclear missiles into satellite launchers

if you're going to a protest today I wish you luck. The only specific thing I will beg of you is this: don't use milk to wash out tear gas or mace. if you see a street medic with milk, yell at them until they throw it out. do not continue to spread lies about emergency medicine.

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
