i used to post this on facebook over and over and whenever someone hazarded a guess i'd respond "could be any" or "could be all" and it always got so many interactions that it was at the top of everyone's feed all day every day

I think that's icky if it goes unexamined but my main D&D campaign is explicitly this, including the problematic elements inherent in it. The colonial power is a Roman empire that never fully fell, and lots of other anachronistic stuff appears as well.
I often feel that "default D&D" is American Frontier dynamics with Renaissance technology in a medieval theme-park sauce.
Related to conversations about fantasy adventure and colonialism: one thing that is very interesting about D&D's medievalism is that its default geography -- frontiers, large areas of wilderness, etc. -- is not particularly what medieval W. Europe was like.

This is what they don't want us to see. None of the information here is likely to be new to you if you've been following the news at all, but seeing the young men and hearing it from their mouths is different. That's what they really don't want - for us to acknowledge their humanity.
