George Floyd was murdered by police five years ago today.

The Say Their Names cemetery in Minneapolis features memorials for Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Amadou Diallo, Oscar Grant, Korryn Gaines, Freddie Gray and far too many more Black people who died at the hands of police.

The absolute glee some are displaying in blaming Palestinians, and people who protested on their behalf, for their own ethnic cleansing is a strategic error (obvs you target the decision maker), a political error (obvs you need those votes), and a moral error (obvs fix your hearts or die).

we're going to need independent, authoritative medical statisticians - probably having to compile data down to the level of individual hospitals in red states - to measure the rise in deaths as a result of this, because they're corrupting or removing the data at the federal level

The Holocaust was legal. We had a law prof teach a whole course on this. Ppl who conflate what is lawful with what is right are easy to manipulate and control.

We either destroy the system destroying our planet for profit, or we live out our lives in a slow apocalypse.
One billionaire couple owns almost all the water in California.

In 1994, the Resnicks secretly seized control of California’s public water supply.

Now their companies use 150 billion gallons every year while working class people suffer under drought conditions.

Zuck is not having a midlife crisis, he's pivoting to an open embrace of fascism. The aesthetics are secondary and primarily about his awareness of how many people can be deceived by even the worst attempts of oligarchs to pretend to be cool and normal.

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

as LA is burning, a swath of the country is recovering from an ice storm, Alabama is preparing for up to 6” of snow and I’m praying for the TX power grid, a reminder:

we don’t need climate action just for future generations, we need it now.

the climate crisis is here, all around us

So unbelievably tired of these articles celebrating people who work forever. We have everything we need to create a society where people retire younger and younger, a few people are just hoarding all of those resources.
This sort of “feel good” story needs to stop.

Barack Obama took Edward Said’s class as a Columbia undergrad.

Obama later befriended Rashid Khalidi as they both taught @ UChicago.

Khalidi later became the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies @ Columbia — and author of the book Joe Biden just got.

Here's the trio at a 1998 event.

If we want better fashion culture in the US, we have to lower the cost of housing and commercial real estate, support independent craftspeople, build denser neighborhoods, improve walkability, and get rid of overly restrictive zoning laws. Let kook culture thrive.
