I wrote a thing for Daily Maverick on global capital's chokehold on our collective will. It's also about COP29, 30, and clinate change in general.
The greedy people who destroyed the environment and spent billions on climate misinformation will fix it for us again, as long as we shake and dilute them a bit with public funds.

The slide into proper warlord-dictatorship happened much quicker than expected. I think many Americans haven't actually even processed it as a possibility, which makes them blind to it happening in front of their eyes.

The real damage is what you don’t see. This square is ordinarily full of families, happy children running around, people reading books, playing music, and one of the city’s smallest and most affordable farmers markets.

The international media deserve every ounce of criticism for their naked capitulation to power in reporting on Palestine.

We must not, however, take it so far that we denounce all journalism. We need big outfits digging for dirt, but freed from the profit motive and accountable to society.

Fascinating watching the slide happening in the most powerful country on Earth. Had this happened in Africa, the vocabulary used to describe The Regime would have been vicious.

Off the top of my head: you can only approach this in prose *from a viewpoint*. That can be a character or the authorial voice/universe definer, and each will have consequences not only for the thing you’re describing but the reader’s understanding of the perspective…
But yeah, definitely seen quite a few stories where the author is clearly *trying* to do the opening Star Wars shot, or the beginning of The Matrix, and it just doesn't work because the spectacle doesn't impress in prose.
