That’s categorically not how governments work. They don’t have fixed income (if they run out of cash, they can raise taxes, borrow from overseas lenders or get foreign investors.) They also don’t really have a fixed credit limit on what they can borrow. (They have something called a GDP ratio, ie. how much they’ve borrowed as a country versus how much their annual output is. In the UK, that’s 97%. In NZ, last year we’re at 45%. So by global standards, we’re actually doing really good.) And also, if the government doesn’t pay it back, no one takes the TV. As Andrew Dilnot, former head of the UK statistics authority said, unlike households, countries don’t die, retire, or ever really pay back their debt. So in a very literal sense, this metaphor is whack. Now, the Government knows there’s nothing similar between household borrowing and government borrowing. But it also knows that you don’t know that. (Because no one ever explains this properly.) So why use this metaphor if it’s so misleading? Because it’s the language of fear. And that’s bloody useful for distracting you.

Ms van Velden, It shouldn't rankle quite so much to have a woman presiding over ongoing systemic discrimination in pay for women in Aotearoa New Zealand, but it does. I hope your status as the sellout token libertarian woman placed in charge of trying to make this policy seem reasonable was worth it to you, because you're certainly making a number of other women pay dearly for it, both figuratively and literally. Many of them are among the poorest paid people in the country and you've just guaranteed that their path to wage justice is even more fraught. Pretending that this rushed legislation under urgency, with no public consultation, is about changing to a more robust and evidence-based system is an affront to anyone in this nation with half a functioning brain, and you should be embarrassed that your transparent attempts to balance an austerity budget have such a poorly conceived cover story. People will not remember your time as a minister in this government with fondness, or indeed any respect, since you have failed to demonstrate any reciprocal respect for your women constituents. Like its forerunner insults, "political correctness" and virtue signalling" - it basically means being a decent person. You know: calling people by the names they want to be called by, giving hungry kids a feed, caring for the destitute and the ill, letting those with talent from all parts of the country rise into jobs they are skilled at. It's disturbing that they're escalating their vice signalling right now - when the United States is using the same rage to dismantle their economy, their alliances, and their social contract with each other. The thing about being a decent person is: it's quiet. It takes self-control to not make cheap insults about someone who disagrees with you. It takes thinking ahead, and humility, and paying attention to your instincts vs your intellect. It takes - sometimes - helping out someone who's making choices you disagree with. And it also pays off ten-fold in better relationships with people, with thriving families, with strong communities - and strong economies. I don't like Chris Luxon's vision of the country as a dog-eats-dog world. We're Kiwis. We can do better. Stephanie Pegg, Wilton
