This might be comforting, but, for Reform now, it may be very wrong. The buck stops with Trump now: he has no real alibi. All RUK-controlled councils have to do is undertake a Poplarism of the right.
Great piece. It's a basic feature of populism that it can campaign but it can't govern. On a smaller canvas, counties which have just elected Reform councils are about to find that out.
“This is the nature of nationalist populism, whether it wears a red cap in Michigan or a turquoise rosette in Runcorn. It is expert at turning grievance, division and nostalgia into votes. But when it comes to governing, it will always fail.” Latest column www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

although dunking on Lord Glasman and Blue Labour is fun and correct, maybe some of that effort should be spent on considering that he (in many ways like Corbyn) is a symptom of the complete lack of ideas on the centre left, an absence which is now entering its second decade.

That interview shows that you can’t interview Trump and do it in a typical fashion.

Ask him one question and don’t move on until he either answers or has a meltdown.

Also maybe come prepared with data and facts- prices have not come down and there have not been 7 trillion dollars of investments.

When we look at how a referendum has been used in different political systems (ahem), I always highlight the New Zealand example as one where a highly significant decision with multiple options for change was handled in a way that demonstrated informed consent and a mandate for a specific outcome.

trump's unique advantage is that he literally comes out of — and to some extent helped build — the cultural environment that has produced the stories that these voters find compelling.

And this fits in with a right-wing view of Dem politics, where elites buy reliable client groups with patronage via welfare/DEI.

On this reading, you assemble a similar pattern of client groups by granting certain exceptions, or by accepting defeat in some fights.
The problem here is that white women *did* respond to Dobbs: by voting Trump for president and abortion protections downballot.

It's 'there *are* ethical abortions (mine)' and negotiating a position under empire.
But that doesn’t explains the rightward shift of the Latin vote, or the lack of response by white women to Dobbs. The rot wasn’t just in the campaign—it’s in the entire coalition concept that Dems built their plans around.

That coalition just does not reliably exist anymore.

The more you look at this election the more it feels like 2004 where the right really turned out in the rural areas and ate into democrat margins with atypical and young voters

I'm not sure. A big offensive too early may lead to Biden & Co. doing what they can to box Trump in by Jan. Putin can dangle a settlement now, and plan the big offensive for the spring, when Trump is fully in control and just has to react.
Knowing the end of US support for Ukraine is coming very soon, Russia will be tempted to go for broke, take as much Ukrainian territory as possible, until "Pax Americana" is imposed.

It's a mistake for Harris not to speak yet. Fundamentally, if you seek to represent all Americans, you have to acknowledge their choice, even if you really believe another twist in the tale might occur. Not doing so makes you a character in someone else's story.

A word in their shell-like for foreign leaders: they will probably get most out of the new Administration by being transactional & personal. Don't be cloying & over-eager; set firm boundaries; always be ready to offer a deal; seek 1-on-1 meetings with the President wherever possible.

One thing to remember about Sunak's new departure: policies designed for conference almost always come in with a bang and go out with a whimper.

Even by the standards of the last few years, the presentation of this new package by No. 10 has been jarringly maladroit and unsure. You would think Sunak had been forced to make this statement at gunpoint.
