Something really striking about the energy transition in the UK is that, despite having halved our emissions since 1990, very few people are aware of this success - only a quarter of the public think we've made a meaningful difference to cutting our emissions

Some people in recent days have alleged a ‘cover-up’ over the grooming & rape of hundreds of young girls in predominantly northern UK towns, leading to calls for a ‘national’ public inquiry into child sexual exploitation

92% of the land in this country is inaccessible to the public. England must look to the Scottish model and extend access to nature and heritage in our countryside.

New research finds Britain is a “world-leader” in legal crackdown on climate & environmental activism.

UK police are arresting protesters at 3 x average global rate.

Rather than tackling issues provoking such protest, the state’s focus is on punishing dissent.

Due to the impact of various tax and benefit policies, increases in the minimum wage do not have an entirely progressive impact on household incomes.

This is the result of some benefits being withdrawn and more taxes being paid as earnings rise.

The Church of England and its tolerance for abusers is a disgrace.
And these bishops who put the safety of children last, well behind their concern for the Church's reputation and fell feeling for their abusing colleagues, should absolutely not be in the House of Lords.

If you bring central London to a halt to campaign against catastrophic climate change you're treated as a "barmy" eco "fanatic" who deserves to be locked up.

But if you do the same to hang on to your multimillion pound inheritance tax exemption then you're a brave freedom fighter defying the odds

Not sure what the data source is here, but the figures feel broadly in line with I've read elsewhere, so I'm reposting.
It's not just the raw £ or $ that matter, it's the enormous influence, politically and economically, that goes with the wealth.
In 1970 the richest 1% had about 4x the wealth of the average person, and the richest 0.01% had about 30x.

Now the richest 1% have 12x the wealth of the average person, and the richest 0.01% have 1000x.

This is the problem.

Difficult to describe what a dangerous moment we are in.

The owner of Twitter/richest man in the world/closest adviser to the next US president is promoting a far-right Tommy Robinson (!) documentary to his 200 million followers.

This is the mainstreaming of violent, Islamophobic fascism.

The assisted dying debate is a sensitive and emotive issue. There are some powerful arguments on both sides. My view - in favour - has been strengthened recently by the experience of watching a dear friend whose suffering at the end could have been prevented by such a law.
🧵More in Common have spent the past few months polling & talking to people about assisted dying, we've shared our findings in today's Sunday Times. Speaking to people on both sides has been some of the most moving opinion work I've been involved in. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Over 1/3 children living in poverty in UK 👇What's worse is we know what's driving much of child poverty at the moment: the two child limit and the benefit cap. Had the Government lifted the two-child limit it would have lifted ~300,000 children out of poverty and reduced poverty for ~700K children
Shocking news. 36% of UK children are living in poverty according to the latest Social Metrics Commission research (I am one of the Commissioners)
