A good reminder that much thinking around "useful skills" and "worthwhile knowledge" is rooted in whiteness & colonialism.
"They have a degree in underwater basket-weaving" is meant to be a statement that someone lacks useful, marketable skills.

The phrase *may* originate from a 1956 article on traditional Inuit/Yupik weaving technique where bark remains submerged between stages of weaving, to keep strips pliable.

Fossil fuels are the source material for most plastics + for the chemicals added to them. As firms lose their iron grip on energy production, indications are they're shifting to using oil + gas for plastic production, which has more than doubled since 2000 + looks set rise 40% in the next 10 years.

@bokane.org my 师妹 who works at the Palace Museum (Beijing) occasionally reports on visits from the palace cats and apparently there is one named 饺子 who takes turns sleeping on everybody’s desks 😁 sadly not an orange cat but a pure white one, so maybe not Gyoza’s brother from another mother
