i notice a certain amount of what gets called “media analysis” is not much more than deciding which character was calculably right or wrong, justified or unjustified in their actions, and i find that a wildly incomplete and moreover kind of boring approach to thinking about fiction

Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

Related: my most cursed bit of Assassin's Creed lore: Altair "Ibn-La'Ahad" means "Son of No-One" - a fitting name in a fitting naming tradition for an orphan.

Sadly, in later releases and merch, his dad was revealed to have been named Umar Ibn-La'Ahad & I hope you can see the issue here

🚨 Pendleton Ward, Rebecca Sugar, Ian JQ, and Patrick McHale will all reunite for a special called ‘The Elephant’ on Adult Swim.

The animated special will follow different teams that are responsible for one of three acts, without any knowledge of what the others are making.

Miss Rachel isn’t on Bluesky, but her posts about Gaza should be. I wish this wasn’t so unusual to see from people with big platforms.

In a just world we'd have a million Star Wars shows as sharp, thoughtful, and devoted to the actual manifestation of the franchise's antifascist aesthetic as Andor

A nice perk of working outside are the tiny sidequests I get to go on: informing a blind man walking in the middle of the road that the sidewalk has reopened after construction, lending a lost kid my work phone to call their parents, catching a city buses attention when someone's running to catch it

Kids aren’t being taught HOW to watch television. They aren’t being taught that weekly releases, especially for those more serialized shows, are actually MORE engaging than binge watching. They see a show come out and plow through the episodes without stopping to feel or consider or theorize.

Common Side Effects is the best show that I hear too little about. Animated show on Max by Mike Judge and the folks behind Scavenger’s Reign (another banger.) It’s hilarious, surprising, moving and profoundly relevant. Full recommendation.

No generation is better than this without putting in the minimal effort to avoid stagnation. The pressures of modern life & adulthood are immense, but simple pleasures & camaraderie can be yours. Reactionary nostalgia is a cage, don't say goodbye to something if you still want to do it, just do it.
millennials please. please stop this. we were supposed to be better than this

nostalgia is a sort of society-wide alzheimer's, where you watch it happen to people older than you and it seems inconceivable, and then before you know it it's destroyed your brain as well

Being open and willing to earnestly engage with someone else's recommendations with as much care as you'd hope they might approach your own goes so much farther than trying to be know-it-all "as a flex"
