A real Good Samaritan
One act of kindness that befell Leeds writer Bernard Hare in 1982 changed him profoundly. Here he tells his story.

Dog-whistle and factually incorrect. Ladies, raise your hand if you were sexually assaulted by a boy at school? I’d wager this or a family member is most women’s first experience of sexual violence

Robbie Gibb was appointed to the BBC Board by Boris Johnson, was an editorial advisor for GB News, and worked as Theresa May's Director of Comms.

He is not impartial or neutral. The government should remove him from the Board immediately to protect the BBC's independence.

Should Gibb be sacked? yes, obviously. He's an abomination of basic journalistic standards. His GB News channel spreads conspiracy theory & disinformation. His Jewish Chronicle newspaper spreads invented stories. He is plainly trying to undermine the BBC so it's as bad as everything else he touches.

This is what is happening. It is cynical. It is strategic. It is organised. It is well funded.

And we need to pay attention.

The far right - and their cheerleaders, mimics, tribute acts, and handmaidens have identified two presentational frameworks that give them cut-through and traction. 1/7

Quite why is unclear at this point. Clearly this place is a bit of an echo chamber. It’s just an echo chamber full of people previously inclined to support Labour and half the journalists and think tankers in the country.
I just realised, the Labour Party doesn’t even have an account over here?!

Beth Rigby: "Keir Starmer has changed his top team more than I've had hot dinners."

In two years before Starmer we had 3 PMs, 4 Chancellors, 3 Foreign Secretaries, 5 Home Secretaries, 5 Education Secretaries, 5 Cabinet Secretaries, etc. - total 221 ministerial departures.

Maybe Beth is on a diet.

The Conservatives have drafted the legislation.

ANY one of the conditions being met leads to ILR being revoked.

If annual income falls below £38,700 for six months (for any reason at all)

The Secretary of State would also have the powers add whatever further conditions they want.

As long as the Tories were less extreme than Reform I thought better them on the right than the alternative but if they’re going to be another far right party - one with better infrastructure and funding and more MPs than Reform - we should pray for their destruction

The more I think about her actual words, and how appallingly under-reported/understood they still seem to be, the more shocked & disgusted I am.
Given Lam's appalling comments, the UK government needs to make it free for those with permanent leave to remain to obtain British citizenship, to promote people making the change, and to make it quicker.

They need to do that to remove understandable anxiety.

Labour seems to be pursuing an even more self-destructive variant of the Rishi Sunak strategy: taking a position that will never win over Reform-leaning voters and simply infuriating and alienating the people who actually elected them to office.
If Labour cannot denounce mass deportation of permanent residents, Idi Amin style, what is the point of them?

All in the last 2 years.

Lisa Nandy: "He's right to say that it is unprecedented in recent times that an entire group of away supporters have been entirely banned from a game"

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.

Is there a reason I ask that the Times are using a picture of asylum seekers in a boat to describe rules for migrants who came on legal routes such as skilled worker visas for doctors?
Tough new conditions to be imposed on migrants who want to settle in the UK will not apply to more than a million people who arrived in the UK under the post-Brexit immigration surge
Labour’s tough new rules will not apply to migrants already in UK

With Starmer making his active pitch to out Reform Reform today, it shows just how out of touch he is with reality. Labour can never beat Reform by copying them. They are losing more support to Greens and Lib Dems than Reform, and will continue to do so while they attack marginalised groups.
Long thread: There are two main "defences" I see put forward of Labour which crop up:
1) If you don't vote for Labour you'll get Reform
2) It's all the fault of right wing media painting Labour in a bad light.
The thing is that neither of these are actually a defence of what Labour is doing. 1/23

Seriously. A one-hour Party Political Broadcast. Followed at the top of the next hour with top story billing and a highlights package.

Exactly how will this be "balanced" across their coverage?

Where is Ofcom? Where is Nandy?
For 56 minutes Sky News and BBC News interrupted everything else and carried a Reform UK feed live, uninterrupted, unchallenged. The stream spluttered, froze, pixelated - dozens of times - still they stuck with it. FOR ONE HOUR.

This is an editorial choice. No other party gets this coverage. ~AA

The British constitution would allow them to do it if they had a majority but at vast cost to our society and way of life.
