And when those new coercive powers are introduced, then what follows will prompt another round of more coercive powers for the state, and then another, and then another.

The UK is trapped in an illiberal spiral.

I just spent a week in Portland. The city was busy with tourists and locals enjoying late summer. A prosperous downtown. Factually, there is no observable evidence of a city needing military intervention. A reminder that this is not normal. Please pay attention.

Why are the American president's claims about autism the first item on British news bulletins?

He's not our president, the advice doesn't apply here and he's not presented any evidence to support his assertions.

So why spread these claims? What make this the biggest story in the UK?

Proportion of civil servants from low SEB by seniority. It is v striking to me...

1 - how flat the lines are. Almost no change over time?
2 - how perfectly stacked they are. Consistently smaller proportion of low SEB civil servants at each grade.

(stats are from people survey so not perfect)

OK so feeling slightly apprehensive about this, which I suppose is kind of the point. This is an attempt at a progressive view on masculinity and on men getting laid. God help me. iandunt.substack.com/p/how-to-be-...

The right story narrative about male attractiveness is grounded in Social Darwinism and free market economics. Can progressives tell a better story?

There's a theme being repeatedly expressed on this platform: "why can't you just protest about Gaza without mentioning Palestine Action?"
I can't believe anyone is so stupid that they cannot understand why we might challenge PA'S proscription. It can only be wilful, which means an instant block.

I was a medic at the Santa Ana protests in OC today.

I watched police fire tear gas, flash bangs, & rubber bullets into crowds of men, women, & children.

Other medics and I were clearly marked with red crosses, and the police were targeting us.

One of the most fucked up things I’ve ever seen.

Every time I read about banning books, I think of this:

Reading a book with a gay character will not make you gay any more than reading a book about Einstein will make you a genius.
If you're afraid that books might change someone's thinking, you're not afraid of books — you're afraid of thinking.
