For feeds covering critical moments like elections, this sort of transparency can help prevent algorithmic bias and even preserve trust in the press and protect democratic institutions.

It can’t be overstated how important this sort of innovation is for the time we’re living in.

Also, because the trending feed was open source, it’s easy to find out if it was being manipulated.

Just recreate the feed on @graze.social and use the “debug” tool to see if sus posts match the presented algorithm.

If they match, you know content isn’t surreptitiously being added to the feed.

@pfrazee.com goes into detail on this in his post below. It’s amazing to see the actual algorithm used to show content on the trending feed, and it’s something I’ve never seen happen on social media before.

It’s all there, open source and easily reproducible. That’s a future I want to be a part of.

A fantastic write-up from @graze.social on the trending feed for the NYC Mayoral Election.

What’s especially telling is the side-by-side comparison between the reporting-focused content from the @gothamist.com / @wnyc.org feed and the xenophobic & hate-mongering content on the X feed.
On Tuesday night, you may have noticed something a little different on Bluesky. Here's a peek behind the scenes of how the election feed came together. Endlessly grateful for this collaboration with @wnyc.org/@gothamist.com & @bsky.app!

A cabbage farm in upstate NY. Cabbage is one of the hardest crops to pick. Huge crates are pulled by a tractor, workers have to rush to keep up and fill them. Picking cabbage requires long hours of bending over and cutting the plant and is done in all sorts of weather. #WeFeedYou

When your patient has extreme thirst with body aches & a 400+ blood glucose, that can't be ignored.

When the planet is experiencing worsening heatwaves, wildfires, & hurricanes as atmospheric CO2 rises, that can't be ignored either.

Global warming is the disease, the patient is all of us.

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video.

I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.

But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.

For the last 12 months, the fascists along with the enormous media machine they bought have been trying to convince us that we are powerless.

Let tonight be a reminder that they’re wrong. Come November next year those pendejos are going to lose.
