It's believed we've lost the true name for bear in Germanic languages - "bear" roughly means "brown one," a euphemism used instead of the true name because it was believed that saying their true name would summon the bear.

sometimes, I'm so impressed by our students - how kind, thoughtful, and dedicated they are, and how much better put together than I and my classmates were, and I have to remind myself that I and my classmates were sixteen years old freshman year lol
