despite having absolutely no ties to the entertainment industry, it is my life's goal to get Laurie Metcalf that EGOT. She's halfway there!

I genuinely enjoy Overdrawn at the Memory Bank
Which MST3K movie was actually the best *movie*? Which one has the most non-ironic fans and defenders.

Danger: Diabolique comes to mind (though certainly not the best of the Diabolique films). This Island Earth as well, since they had to pick something a bit more palatable for the theatrical film.

The rather baffling entry for “X” in The Merry Cobler and His Musical Alphabet (ca. 1800). See the other 25 letters here: http://buff.ly/1QGXAjR

And more examples of how the letter “X” has been treated in alphabet books here: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/x-is-for

New from my distributor I foolishly read on this, my supposed week off.

@ironcircuscomics.bsky.social does a lot of library business. I'm dreading that January statement.

Gang, if you have ever wanted an Iron Circus title, now would be a wonderful time for you to grab one. 💀

It's believed we've lost the true name for bear in Germanic languages - "bear" roughly means "brown one," a euphemism used instead of the true name because it was believed that saying their true name would summon the bear.
Man, everything is so bleak, anyone got a fun fact or little bit of trivia they want to share

I want someone to make a Merlin app but it's just Mark Catesby's descriptions of birds from 1732.

"This Bird, by its ungrateful brawling Noise, seems at Variance and displeased with all others" is a great field mark

sometimes, I'm so impressed by our students - how kind, thoughtful, and dedicated they are, and how much better put together than I and my classmates were, and I have to remind myself that I and my classmates were sixteen years old freshman year lol

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

Things that will get you kicked out of academia forever:
- taking maternity leave at the wrong time
- spending too much time with your kids
- reporting harassment
- not moving every 2-3 years
- taking a partner's job/preferences into account
- mouthing off before tenure
A guy makes ONE tiny mistake (has a years-long friendship with the world's worst sex trafficker; brags about sexually harassing colleagues; is racist; says women are stupid) and his whole LIFE is blown up (does slightly fewer speaking engagements; keeps teaching at #1 university)??!?!?!?!?!
So Harvard is keeping this guy, but Claudine Gay had to step down over ginned up plagiarism accusations and bad-faith accusations of anti-Semitism.

Got it.
