It takes a while to get there, but everything turns out alright for El and the boys. Also, Steve Harrington isn’t just some fancy hairdo; he’s also the best damn babysitter in all of Hawkins, Indiana.

20 years ago today, Wilson Yip, Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Simon Yam, and Wu Jing combined forces to kick all of our asses with “SPL: Sha Po Lang.”

Here’s my review from 2006:
“Sha Po Lang” by Wilson Yip (Review) - Opus
When its firing on all cylinders, there’s nothing I love as much as Hong Kong cinema, and Sha Po Lang is a reminder of almost every reason why.

Reposting this for the Monday evening crowd… The country music genre prides itself on authenticity, sincerity, and tradition. So why is it so uniquely primed for AI-generated slop like Breaking Rust?

For a genre that prides itself on authenticity, country music seems strangely primed for fake artists.

This @gianmarcosoresi.bsky.social bit from 2022 now seems strikingly relevant in light of Megyn Kelly’s recent statement that there’s “a difference between a 15-year-old and a 5-year-old” when it comes to child sexual abuse.

“There Is No Antimemetics Division” by @qntm.org is out today. Blending cosmic horror, bleak humor, and esoteric concepts, it’s pretty trippy stuff, but also clever, enjoyable, and even a bit moving.

Mystifying that anybody, especially a fiction writer, is still under the impression that there's only a single James Bond film continuity

Do you actually think Casino Royale was supposed to be a prequel to Dr. No? Did you not catch the word "reboot" at any point when that film came out?
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."

We’ve lost a true cinema legend. Seeing Nakadai’s performance in “Ran” on the big screen earlier this year was a true privilege.

If there’s one thing I simply don’t have enough of in my life, it’s negotiating with insurance companies.
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

God’s kingdom will not be thwarted or undermined by any human effort, but Trump and his administration should still take care lest they be judged guilty of foolishly hindering it.
Whither Religious Liberty? Trump’s Administration Bans Prayer and Communion at ICE Facilities - Opus
The administration’s actions aren’t just a violation of the First Amendment. They’re fundamentally un-Christian.

my theory is Musk relishes the idea of being a Renaissance Man and know that means he should be a refined appreciator of art but is too busy with anime porn and anti-trans youtube videos to even watch a movie, let alone read a book, God forbid go to an art museum. that's why JCO's post cut so deep.

JCO landed such a body blow on Musk that I expect the man will soon hire a department of personal ghostwriters to create and maintain believable profiles for him on Letterboxd, Backloggd, Goodreads, Yelp, Spotify, Leafly, Pet Forums . . .
For reference. I might print this out and hang it in my house:

On their final album, Moscow’s Джуна (aka, Dzhuna) display a remarkable knack for spinning together goth, post-punk, and shoegaze under the shadow of Natalia Evstegneeva’s icy vocals.

Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran” (1985). Incredible images, an amazing soundtrack, solid performances, and heavy observations of human nature. Even better, I got to see it in the theater.
