👀 An absolutely wild piece about a Chinese policymaker who thinks German reunification offers lessons. The most glaring oversight being how East Berliners died fleeing to freedom and democracy, while no one in Taiwan wants any bit of Beijing's autocracy.
German reunification could hold lessons for Beijing on Taiwan: government adviser
Policies adopted towards the former East Germany may offer ideas on how to incentivise the island to reunite with mainland China, forum told.

It’s all theatrics and performative.

Trump creates the problem or challenge.

Trump then offers a fake fix or solution to the fake problem or challenge.

Trump sycophants then cheer him as a genius and a political leader and problem-solver for the ages.

Rinse and repeat.

Theatrics. That’s it.

Please, Canada, let’s learn to be less complacent. Diversify and disentangle this market. Step Two - join the European Union. Yesterday he complained because we keep out American banks, food etc - it’s because we have higher standards. That makes us a great candidate for the EU. Why settle for less?

One of the reasons authoritarianism can win is because ordinary people want to keep their mortgages, or if you’re a tech billionaire, your dozen homes and Picassos in the Swiss vault. There’s also obligation to family, which is legit. Resistance costs.

There are massive cuts all over our industry right now, which isn't new but always painful to see/experience. This -- buyouts announced at a billionaire-led outlet while acknowledging how essential @latimes.com coverage has been to deliver critical info about the wildfires -- is a gut punch.
In an email to staff shared with me, the LA Times says it’s offering voluntary buyouts to all staff who have been there for more than two years.
