haven't coded for over a year - the genAI auto coding/suggestion thingy on collab is blowing my mind and also annoys me a bit - trying to pick the skill back up and it doesn't help if you give me the answer straight away lol

i’m sure threatening a country with devastation is a great way to achieve a lasting peace. when does the rest of the world team up to show the united states the days of it throwing its weight (and military) around are over?

I tend to find 'bad' essays more time consuming to mark because the cognitive effort of providing useful feedback is higher. Could find that annoying, but it's actually much more productive for getting to grip with what 'good' writing is.

Cursed... A career journalist who has zero involvement in actual class-based organising diagnoses our present issues as stemming from 'toxic victimhood' and 'woke' politics. This is so far away from the concrete issues we deal with in actual organising that wins results.

Dear US scientists,

We've been hearing a lot of questions of the form
"Why aren't universities doing anything!? They need to speak out!"

We can explain.

It's bad news. We're on our own. But understanding why can help us all figure out our plan.

Police tried to protect a small group of armed neo-Nazis from angry community members today on a freeway overpass in #Ohio, people managed to push through police as the Nazis escaped in a box truck.

Young people then set fire to a stolen Nazi flag.

If anyone claims that the current anti-trans panic was caused in any part by trans people advocating for our human rights, that person is lying through their teeth.

The religious right lost on marriage equality, and immediately started going after trans people instead. That's what happened.

People who ask questions like "is that allowed?" or "is that legal?" really misunderstand the spirit of Crime Season.
Laws are just words decided via a public ceremony and what's allowed is whatever you can do if nothing stops you. Crime Season is all about learning whether anything will stop you.

Senator Andy Kim just went to the USAID building, talked to the security guard there to confirm employees are being barred entry, and then did a press gaggle right there in front to call it out.

This is doing something. This is making an effort on messaging. Other Democratic lawmakers: take notes.

Book burning?
If everything was digital in Hitler's 1930s Germany, this is what his book burning would have looked like: deletion of data, removal of websites, retraction of scientific studies, censorship of words like "equity," "diversity," "climate change."

I think this is partially true but also too reductive.

We have one party who have embraced extra-legal means to achieve their goals, and another party with their withered claws on the remaining levers of "legitimate" state power who are unwilling to let go because it would fuck with their money.
Interesting thread but I think the much simpler explanation is it's kayfabe. Both parties are more or less united in this political project. And the genre of pseudo-critical apologetics that presents theories of cowardice, lacking spine etc are a form of conservative, obfuscatory retrenchment
I think the fascists who are now carrying out a coup in the US have spent the last 8 years conducting a Criminal Interview of the Democratic party.

They've concluded, correctly, that the Democrats are incapable of making the mental shift required to do what's necessary to defend themselves. 5/

Bleak when overreach is one of the only things keeping the hope machine going...
J.P. Morgan econs on Trump’s latest are “increasingly concerned that the policy mix may tilt into an unintentionally far less business-friendly stance. The sustained 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico set to start this weekend is materially different than the tariff increases built into our baseline.”

Ask yourself what you’d think about another country if a new regime quickly prohibited all government agencies from communicating with the public, then began deleting data from government websites that it deemed unacceptable.
FYI if you are looking for the Dec. 2024 AFFHT-0007 dataset from the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (which has apparently been deleted by the Trump administration) I've got the nationwide backup on my hard drive.
