I have had other colleagues from Europe tell me they simply will not attend conferences in the US for the foreseeable future because they no longer feel welcome. One thing I was not prepared for about academia was how there are pockets where profs view aspirational consumption as a way to signal one's status upon promotion/tenure.
I actually got asked, "Are you going to buy a bigger house?" when word got around that I had submitted my T&P documents. Unreal.

I, too, have been a target of the “ if you had any ethics you would quit” ire when I worked at Deadspin. But journalism jobs are few and far between these days, and there are very few “good” media owners.
