The boardgame + @kedseconomist.com crossover I didn't know I could hope for! 🎲✂️
This is fascinating: On the pod, @kedseconomist.com cites the example of a US manufacturer of board games to explain what's wrong with Trump's tariffs and why unleashing so much pain and turmoil to restore manufacturing is an incoherent goal.

Such an interesting SCOTUS tour! Loved that Circle DC offered events beyond gaming!
Friday kicked off with tours of SCOTUS and the Folger Library, followed by a session of John Company 2ed. The end was unsuprisingly going bankrupt.

Amabel is doing great work with her video series, producing wonderful thought-provoking essays, and I'd highly recommend watching all of them. The latest hits particularly hard for me, making a strong case for board games' capacity to be serious art and exploring their use of mechanisms as metaphor.
It’s finally here! Mechanisms as Metaphors: How Board Games Create Meaning takes a look at how board games make persuasive arguments, how they might move us emotionally, and how the ways we talk about the form might hinder its development.

This is an excellent point. I would rather a game have a clear voice and some sharp edges than be “perfectly polished” and say nothing at all.
This is the biggest reason I have an allergic reaction to anyone who gives design advice couched in the language of "fun" or "engagement" Pull on that thread and you'll find it takes you to some best practice that was originally used to build slot machines or determine the most effective pop-ups.

I once wrote an article that I hard dislike Secret Hitler and especially the narrative that nazis are somehow smart, sneaky people that you have to "find out" to battle them.

They are not. They are absolutly clear about what they are. As is evident again. Nothing on all of this is a surprise.

My favorite of the event was Gibberers—shoutout to Candice Harris for teaching.

Our fake language had some limits but excelled in some areas. (If, for example, you needed to communicate a death by bee stings in your posterior, you'd be well understood.)

Anyone know where I can score a copy?
