I recommend the late (sigh) Tony Horwitz's book Midnight Rising on John Brown's raid. He makes a convincing case that it was a successful bid for martyrdom... he wanted to be caught, failing to take simply precautions that an experienced guerilla like himself would have insisted on.
John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry began on this day in 1859.
