New to Bluesky (and social media!). American who literally sold the farm & moved to Portugal. Interested in and may post about gardening (missing it!), the natural world, food, culture, travel, moving abroad, science, art, and 🤷‍♀️??.

We did it. We cashed out. Sold our home, cars, furniture - everything, and moved to Portugal sight-unseen. 2 suitcases each. We know no one here. Wreckless? Perhaps. But, it will be an interesting adventure. Love to hear about your moving abroad experiences if you care to share.

FINALLY GOT IT!

I've taken well over 100,000 pelican pictures, maybe 200,000.

Over 20,000 the past month alone.

Today, I snagged "The One That Got Away"

In my infinite optimism, I give you, a very rare:

Fish success story.

I take on average 10,000 stills and a half hour of video every week. Most I'll never think about again. This I'll hold onto until I grow old. 4 hours ago.

Zero edits. No recoloring. No cropping. Nothing. Just straight up reality. 🦑

Ötzi and a 45,000-year-old Siberian were both infected with a cancer-causing strain of HPV.
This is fascinating, and a reminder that we have a vaccine that *prevents cancer* and everyone eligible should get it.
Two ancient humans, including famed ‘Iceman,’ had cancer-causing virus
Findings from ancient DNA may shed light on HPV’s history in our species

Yay! Our clothes and household items that we shipped ahead of our move to Portugal have finally cleared customs - and without paying VAT! Been wearing the same clothes over and over for a few weeks. What a relief 😅

As we get close to the end of the year I thought I'd repost some of my favorites.

These aren't in any particular order, but how could I not start with my absolute favorite of the Kingbird riding on the osprey while carrying a fish?

One of the things I love about the EU is the privacy protections. Every web site I visit allows me to choose if I want to let them store cookies on my computer or collect information about me. If I click 'more options' I can customize exactly what I'll allow them to collect/use.

THIS is my kind of grocery shopping! Farmers selling their produce at the Mercado da Vila Cascais, Portugal. Also, fresh fish & meat, baked goods, herbs & big vats of olives. Bought the best olive oil I've ever tasted directly from a rather mature olive farmer who still presses his own olives 😋

Today is an important day for gardeners. The #wintersolstice signifies the beginning of days getting longer, and many plants use this as an alarm clock to wake up.

Rain ahead California! ☔️ Here are some seeds you can just cast (toss), not even rake in! Grow more flowers. 🌱 See previous posts on milkweed, stop the milkweed myths. Cut only 1/4 of milkweed/season leave ALL cuttings beside plants. OE < 10%. Happy seed casting! 🦋💐

If you have urban/burb neighbors, I beg you not to plant 🌱 Common Milkweed because it is an extremely aggressive plant that will spread by both root and seed up and down the block. It's a great native plant if you want it taking over a rural environment. Otherwise, plant other milkweed varieties.
