Discovered the Yukon in 1985, never leaving. Historian, traveller, photographer, writer, wilderness hiker, naturist, dog lover, antifa - on some particularly fine days, all of those things. Photos are mine unless otherwise credited.
The snow reports from SE Alaska - Juneau and Haines in particular - are shocking. You'll see no more complaints about the 31 inches we have on the ground. alaskaclimate.substack.com/p/southeast-...

A friend just asked if I thought this cake will help him after last night's party. Ummmmmm....... you might want to send flowers, too. Happy New Year, buddy! (He got lucky with the cake, too - Walmart had one already made up. Happens a lot here apparently 😂)

In June 2002, Cathy and I chartered a helicopter for 3 hours to take a couple of her friends from Ontario on a wilderness picnic they're never forget. Incredible! The photo was shot at the head of Lake Bennett's West Arm, one of the finest pieces of wilderness in the territory. #Yukon HeliDynamics

My New Year's Day 1973 - kayaking in the pouring rain on Pitt Lake, BC, with the Cascade Wander Paddlers. (I like snow much better - well, not for kayaking!)

I started The ExploreNorth Blog in 2006, and there are now 1,712 posts with 29,010 photos. Each year, I pick one photo from the posts each month, and highlight them. From luxury in Vancouver and Paris to wilderness hikes in the Yukon and Greenland, here's 2025 - www.explorenorth.com/articles/bes...

Perhaps hiking at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, was even more impressive because of the shit weather. There was no problem with hordes of people on the trail 😀

Pooley Canyon, Yukon. Dead end, but the historic Vault silver mine is up there less than a mile away. August 2013.

The 1905 Vault silver mine in the southern Yukon is the most dangerous mine I've ever gotten into. A very experienced fellow I knew was killed here a few years ago. This photo was shot as I was exploring it for the first time in September 1995 - at 75 now, I've lost my nerve for such places.

I expect that many Canadians will think of Pierre Poilievre when they read this.

While these things do make me cringe a bit, they're a great response to the "51st state" morons.

This mystical image by PacNorth Images‬ ( @pacnorthimages.bsky.social‬ ) reminded me of an iconic photo that was shot when I was 4 years old ❤️

I sure love that sound 🙂

What an absolutely disgraceful situation 😔

A beautiful story to read from the perspective of one of those wild men, looking back at the women I've attracted. The wild and crazy, the needy, and the strong and independent - all left their mark. I've now been with the strongest of them for 26 years - www.outsideonline.com/culture/love...

For many years, I guided tours to Denali National Park 8-12 times each year. It's now been over 10 years since I've been - I was showing friends and my wife around on that trip. I really miss Denali. This is Polychrome Pass.

B-1340 actually tried to leave at 16:15, but got to the south end of the runway, got half-way turned to take off, then stayed there for a very long time across the runway - 20 minutes? The rumour is that they got stuck in the snow on that very tight pad. Taxied back and parked - departed at 20:43.

The Suparna Airlines 747 didn't leave until well after dark had fallen, but I got a few other photos that made the afternoon at CYXY worthwhile.

The drama of Fall on Bear Mountain at Dawson Creek, BC.

I thought nothing would get me out of the house on a day like this. But then a Boeing 747 freighter (B-3140, Suparna Airlines) landed at Whitehorse (diverted from ANC - reason not yet known). Conditions on the Alaska Highway, though, are extremely bad. #Yukon #avgeek

The coldest 5 days in Whitehorse history - January 20-24, 1906, still holds the records for 5 of the coldest 20 days ever, and the record for the longest spell of deep cold. ICE agents are criminals with badges and guns. Until they're all gone, preferably in prison, I won't be returning to the States. Over 400 Canadians have no been detailed by them. And fuck any cop who sees their evil and does nothing.
ICE are not legitimate federal agents. They are not law enforcement. They have no authority to commit crimes, violate rights, assault and kidnap Americans. Zero. They're criminals with badges and guns.
