I developed a new petty theory of everything. There are two antithetical models of countries for infrastructure delivery: those with a strong culture of Public Works and those without it.

China and France are two examples of the former, and Canada is an example of the latter.

When I toured Besançon's L3 BHNS, I thought that the modal filter that turns Av. de l'Observatoire from a through arterial to two dead-end local streets for all but buses & bikes was done as part of the BHNS project in 2016-17 (1st pic).

But it pre-existed in a different form since at least 2006.

Strasbourg.

The bus stop on the left is on a "regular" bus line
The bus stop on the right is on a "BRT" (BHNS) route.

Apart from the size of the shelter, they have the same features, including kessel kerbs for better boarding and real-time arrival info.

I seem to recall the “math doesn’t real” variety of socialists saying that Kansas City making buses fare free was a model to follow nationwide.
These cuts will be devastating for workers and riders, and it’s essential to name the villains here: Kansas City, which has siphoned money away from transit, and surrounding municipalities, who refuse to pay their fare share for a service that benefits the entire region.

Kansas City will lose nearly half its bus routes under transit agency's drastic cost-cutting plan
According to documents obtained by KCUR, the agency plans to cut nearly half of its routes, drastically reduce weekend service and pare down its operating hours. It will also lay off about 171 workers...

Soooo MARTA didn’t use the station rehab bus bridge or weekday night single tracking as an opportunity to do track work? Been under a slow order for a while too

Wow it took him five days to put out a whole bunch of nothing. No beefed up protection for operators? No change in positioning of MARTAs hundreds of police officers so a bunch of cowards don’t feel emboldened to SHOOT A BUS OPERATOR TO DEATH youtu.be/TzZSL8FXxuk?...

Feels like there’s a good amount of chains spreading regionally and nationally that simply have zero urban/suburban presence. Purely rural and exurban

Today it’s 90 mins by diesel train. @alonlevy.bsky.social says electrification and proper scheduling could bring it down to 62/65 mins. But MTA has no plans for that, so instead NYU will just have to pay nurses more (passed on in premiums, of course) to hire a replacement willing to do the commute.

If we want to have level boarding in this country--and we should--we are going to need to figure out how to make this kind of thing legal, doable, compliant, scalable, and accessible.
Side note – Chile Railways are wisely running their long-distance trains with level boarding, with some of the high platforms being quick-build conversions

In my book I don't care how many miles of rail a transit system has. What I want to know is how good the local bus system is? The humble bus is the real workhorse of transit. Going places rail will never go and unlocking access for so many people. Let's get the basics right.
