Happy birthday to Terry Pratchett, who wrote the books so full of humanity and righteous fury at the injustices of the world that he made me a better person

the world is poorer for having lost him, but what a legacy he left behind

here is a thread I wrote about Discworld, and why it’s so special
A DISCWORLD PRIMER*

*or, why should I read this thing that everyone keeps going on about?

Come on in, sit down, pull up a chair. If you have followup questions, feel free to ask me or @ankhmorporkcity.watch, we're always happy to help.

(1/a lot, idk, we'll figure this out as we go)

now that's a stark way to put it! true and depressing

The fact that every mainstream news site is now locked behind a paywall is a real boon for the spread of misinformation, because very few right wing sites have paywalls — which means their disinfo and propaganda can spread much more easily. Paywalls are a slow motion disaster.

Imagine if instead of making COVID isolation guidelines as weak as the flu...

We approved combo rapid tests like this and made them free and available for everyone...

So that people could tell how long they need to isolate based on science and not feelings, whatever the pathogen.

so much of the pronoun bullshit is just people being angry at being asked to treat others with a basic level of respect

you don't have to understand gender dysphoria or being nonbinary or neopronouns to just... respect people's wishes about how they want to be addressed

Able-bodied folks must understand that they only have two possible futures: dying young or aging into disability.

Disability justice is for you, too. Policies such as n95s in healthcare settings will keep you healthy longer.

Can you at least be strategically selfish if you can’t be a decent ally?

Universal Basic Income isn't charity, it's an investment. It's putting dollars in the hands of people who spend it locally and immediately - stimulating the economy from the ground up. This is a financial vaccine to the spiraling cycle of poverty and it’s high time we prescribed it for everyone.

🤗 I love hearing this. Not because I want to convert anyone (tbh, Christianity is by and large... not great; the majority of it is bad, but I'm devoted like an old-school fan of a terrible sports team) but because I want other people to know that faith doesn't HAVE to be hateful and bigoted
I’m not religious but I love seeing other people’s display of religion

@notreallyjcm.bsky.social is a great example of the joy people can have from believing in a higher power, it’s a beautiful sight

What Gen Xers/Millennials/Gen Z are doing right is allowing for the OPEN recognition that being adult doesn't mean you have to give up things that give you joy, in exchange for being an adult. The "childish things" we're meant to put away are things like lack of care, not things that give delight.
im 53 and still have plenty of giggling like a 12 y o moments, so IDK if i qualify as an adult or not,

Yes, this brings the CDC guidelines for COVID into line with guidelines for RSV and influenza.

It's not just that is COVID more severe. The guidelines for RSV and influenza are not right either. We need universal paid sick leave, not permission to return to work while still contagious.
