The Great Unraveling: Reflections on the End of the American Century
By Explaining History It is December 18, 2025. As we approach the end of another year, it feels less like a simple turning of the calendar and more like the closing of a historical epoch. In this week’s podcast, I argued that 2025 will be remembered as the year the "Long 20th Century" finally ended. For 50 years, the Anglo-American world has been in a slow, managed decline.

Yes, who knew?
Hardly a surprise. Any ‘agreement’ with Trump is just the start of attempts to extort more, as his various tariffs on Canada & Mexico have shown. In that respect, his approach to negotiations is similar to Putin’s. Deals are essentially worthless.
The US has suspended the technology deal with the UK that was signed during Donald Trump's state visit

The Great Fracture: Reflections on 2025 and the Civil War within Western Capital
In this week’s podcast, I attempted to synthesize the current moment, drawing on the analysis of commentators like Robert Reich and looking at the deeper structural forces at play. We are witnessing a low-level civil war across the West, but it isn't the traditional battle between socialism and capitalism. Instead, it is a conflict between two factions of capital itself.

The War on the Village: How Paranoia and Bad Data Fueled Stalin’s Drive For Collectivization

History is often shaped not just by material conditions, but by how leaders interpret those conditions. In the late 1920s, Joseph Stalin looked at the Soviet countryside and saw an enemy that wasn't there. In this week’s podcast, I explored the roots of the Soviet famine and collectivization, focusing on the critical period of 1928-1929. Using Robert Conquest’s classic study…

Trumpism Is at War with the Idea of a Citizenry of Equals

The regime’s latest racist fury is tied to the Right’s much broader attempt to redefine citizenship and national identity in service of an exclusionary white nationalist vision.

The Overmighty Noble: Why Taxing Wealth is a Matter of National Security
Taxation is often discussed in dry, technocratic terms. It is the price we pay for civilization, the mechanism that funds our hospitals, schools, and roads. However, in the current political climat…

Obviously the focus is on Plaid, Reform and Labour but the Conservatives also fell drastically - to 2% and a lost deposit. Hardly a ringing endorsement from the Welsh valleys for their recent turn to the far right
Caerphilly, Senedd constituency by-election result:

PC: 47.4% (+19.0)
REF: 36.0% (+34.2)
LAB: 11.0% (-34.9)
CON: 2.0% (-15.3)
GRN: 1.5% (+1.5)
LDEM: 1.5% (-1.2)
GWL: 0.3% (+0.3)
UKIP: 0.2% (+0.2)

Plaid Cymru GAIN from Labour.

can never forget that Fred Trump spent his later years totally gaga but surrounded by a gaggle of senility-denial-enablers who drove him to a make believe office where a make believe secretary had him sign make believe papers—which sounds cute til you see the sequel & the secretary is Stephen Miller
