NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.

Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.

Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Unbelievable.
Trump moves to dismantle major US climate research center in Colorado
The Trump administration is breaking up the National Center for Atmospheric Research, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

Story about H1B visas. Once met an engineer working at Oracle. He was on an H1B. He didn't want to take a risk on another employer because Oracle was really good at handing H1B apps.

This was in 2005-ish. But I still think about how visa system rules warp the tech industry. 🫠

Ranking Brad Lander first FWIW. Just a classic nerd public servant who has been sending out boring emails for years (complimentary) and he did something important today and spoke after with humility.
Here's a longer video of Brad Lander's detention just now inside 26 Federal Plaza as he tried to walk a man out of immigration court, by masked federal agents.

Met a Zohran Mamdani volunteer going door to door today. We joked that it would be nice to have a mayor who is a decent person. Feeling hopeful!!

Sent a form to the IRS about business tax stuff in January.

Received a response today - "about your inquiry received January 29 2025 ... We need more time ... Please allow an additional 60 days"

My tax advisor told me "the IRS is basically in shambles." 😥

I just published the most personal thing I’ve ever written.

The High Cost of Saying No: Why I Can’t Stop Talking About Housing.

It’s about Atlanta and San Francisco, growth, and grief.

And the decisions that shaped my marriage, my loss, and everything after www.dataandpolitics.net/the-high-cos...
The High Cost of Saying No: Why I Can't Stop Talking About Housing
Atlanta isn't just building structures. It is filling them with life. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, we keep fighting over everything except how to make room for each other. Cities, like lives, are made...

“The Great Gatsby is dated and irrelevant.” You’re right. What could a novel about a generation of young men becoming hustlers and white nationalists because they were sold a lie about the American Dream possibly have to say about our current moment?

My least favorite OSS interaction:

Them: Files a bug that the "getting started" example doesn't work.
Me: hmmm... can't reproduce, can you give more details?

Them: btw, I wrote my own container registry, all other registries works fine, could that be the problem?

The Dickin Medal is the highest award that can be issued to animals in British military service. Bearing the words "We Also Serve" it has been awarded 75 times since its creation in 1943.

Only one cat has ever received the award.

Today I googled if a certain AWS property was mutable.

"No," the AI summary told me. "You have to delete it and recreate it. Here are links."

Spent 5 minutes reading the links and couldn't confirm.

So I reworded the search. And found the cli to edit it.

Thanks I hate it
