There’s a lot going on in this godforsaken country but if you have found yourself wondering “What’s up with Richard Glossip’s case?” here you go. My latest for @theintercept.com:

Judge Susan Stallings refuses to recuse herself from the third trial of Richard Glossip, despite her ties to the Oklahoma County DA’s office.

I’ve written about people who were exonerated after being imprisoned for 20, 30, and 40-plus years. Some were nearly executed. None of them ever saw anything near $320 million.

What's gone unsaid in all this talk about homeless people in DC is that so many in the Capital are veterans who are now having the military aimed back at them for the crime of being poor.
REPORTER: Why are troops stationed here at Union Station and at the National Mall instead of areas where crime is higher?

JD VANCE: Crime is actually extremely high here at Union Station. You have vagrants.

It’s not law. It’s not order. It’s just power.
These two things cannot both be true:

1: throwing a sandwich at a federal officer is a violent assault worthy of prosecution.

2: raiding the Capitol grounds, assaulting police offices & vandalizing federal property in an effort to interfere with an election is a harmless protest worthy of pardons.

A Big East Pope!
Church bells rang for hours at Villanova University when they heard that Robert Francis Prevost, a former student, had just become the new pope. “As soon as we heard ‘Prevost,’ everyone started cheering,” one student said. nyti.ms/43m0VSb

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” My intent with this was just to depict the temporary interstate closure, but there is a lot going on here about our local/state politics and public policy.
“Freedom”
April 29, 2025 at 10:54 PM
Thinking about this thread I read earlier in the day, after on my drive home I saw that a portion of I-11 NB between Boulder City and Henderson/Vegas was completely shut to traffic. Apparently a fatal accident earlier. The presumption that driving entails safety and freedom is…weird.
1. Yes, the whole POINT is to take ppl off the road. Because traffic is a classic negative externality.

2. Maybe more money from pricing = cleaner subways!

3. The subways are really safe. So sick of being told to ignore my eyes.

4. "Freedom" isn't a thing in the presence of neg externalities.
Duffy: "She wants to take people off the road and she's taxing people to do it, raising money for the subway system in New York. But then, to put people in the subway -- the subway is dirty! There's violence. There's criminals. It's not safe ... By the way, I like freedom. Let me drive my car."
