A really thoughtful discussion from great speakers with diverse backgrounds on how to genuinely use AI to make the world better. I'm glad to see a growing middle band of people having nuanced conversations about AI, it's impact and the realities of our economic systems.

Being some mixture of eco-socialist with anarchist anti-hierarchy values, who got into AI a decade ago because of it's potential to accelerate science and medicine, and now watching it send us BACKWARDS on climate goals in order to create the worst version of TikTok sure is...an experience.

If you watched the address tonight I’d like to share something I learned after my 3rd breakup with my 2nd boyfriend: liars gonna lie, so just don’t listen.

My wife's smart watch just beeped to alert her that her BPM is over 100. Because she just pulled a legendary joker in Balatro that works REALLY well for her deck.

I love this dork.

The story behind some of the earliest science around climate change is absolutely fascinating, if also very depressing.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have cut off funding for half of the health centers that serve 400,000 Virginians, forcing some to close, which could mean up to 200,000 Virginians are suddenly without healthcare

If we can get either Trump or Muskrat to start shit with Kendrick, I'm pretty sure the entire administration would collapse on itself.

Today, we learnt about Sarah E. Goode - she was one of the first African-American women to receive a United States patent for her cabinet bed.

we are reaching levels of national security threats I did not even realize were possible

this is the kind of thing you put in a terrible b-movie where some nefarious cybercriminal has hacked The Entire Treasury and everyone rolls their eyes at the implausibility

except somehow it's actually real

This connects directly with @ntnsndr.in's point in Governable Spaces that our computer systems typically have a built-in fully-sovereign Admin King who permissions everything. We need to imagine better.
also: as someone who works in software, this level of access simply should not exist for a system like this

every change to something like “the system that pays 1/5 of the economy” should have to go through multiple layers of review and approval, no one person should just have full admin access

For those who think the Treasury breach isn’t a big deal, just know that Elon and his Baby Hitler Hackers now also have your banking information. Those treasury payments have to go somewhere and if you’ve ever gotten a tax refund or a stimulus check your account numbers are in there too.

if I understand American politics correctly, progressivism is something that requires 60 senate votes to work, while national conservatism doesn’t require any votes at all

Yeah, that’s more like it
Dems are fighting back in the courts!

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that there are currently more than 20 lawsuits challenging 11 of Donald Trump’s executive orders.

More of this!

"Bravery isn't an emotion, it's an action."
One lesson I had to learn the hard way while my mom was dying of cancer is that 95% of the time, being brave feels like absolute shit.

I feel like complete and utter shit right now. But bravery isn't an emotion, its an action.

Bravery isn't meant to feel good. Courage only exists in adversity.

This isn't an exaggeration. Before Cockpit Resource Management became a thing, captains who acted like, and were deferentially treated like macho gods of the skies did things like let their planes run out of fuel or fly straight into the ground, and the other officers were too scared to stop them.
the "DEI pilots" thing is not only untrue, but the opposite of true. The piloting profession in the late 20th century was so dominated by one Guy Type that they had to invent a new kind of training that forced pilots to listen to their first officers so they would stop flying planes into the ground

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent.

Opportunities are everywhere.

Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

Three weeks ago the rather unchallenged expectation for the next decade could be pretty neatly summarized as "tech company hegemony".

Then a paper comes out that lays out step by step how to do it, and they release the model freely, to be distributed, retrained and improved as we see fit.

If only the oaths of office of Congress had the same legal authority as literally any piece of paper normal people have to sign in their daily lives. If only there were some mechanism of accountability.

Accountability not bound by ink will be found with blood. No one comes out of this better off.
