Something that infuriates me about social media is people constantly parsing figures of speech for meaning.

“You’d all be speaking German” is a figure of speech for “the Nazis would’ve won the war”

It’s not literally about the German language! That’s not how figures of speech work! Get a life!
What's funny about the classic "without us you'd all be speaking German" line is that it seems to suggest that the bad thing about Germany winning WWII would be having to speak German, and not, like, y'know, the whole Nazi ideology and death camps thing.

Say what you will about the article’s suggestion, but categories like ‘white men w/o a 4yr degree’ are routinely used when talking about polling etc., and people claiming that this is white supremacy or that the definition is referring to Bill Gates are being pedantic or worse
This is a definition that has literally nothing to do with working or class.
it’s just so crazy to see it happen in real time

I’ve seen this kind of take before and it just boggles my mind that people who support trans healthcare will actively compare it to things *they themselves* describe as gross, disturbing, dangerous, etc. and not realize that they’re doing their opponents work for them

Fukuyama described this some years ago, called it “re-patrimonialization”

We Must Reclaim a Government That Belongs to All of Us
From the White House rubble to the bottomless pit of Epstein, we are in the midst of a nationwide struggle over whose government this really is.

Having prosecutors work directly for the state is inherently unfair and, frankly, authoritarian.

Once state officials move ahead with a charge, there should be a kind of bounty system for lawyers who want to take up either prosecution/defense, which should be paid/treated equally
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

So many people pulling their hair out wondering what the Hell a wrong with the media, and I think it’s just this.

1 in 8 Americans is a Californian, 1 in 5 is from CA, NY or IL. But they will never be as ‘real’ an American as some guy from Pig’s Knuckle, Arkansas. It’s a fixed belief.
The reason for this is that this class of people has internalized the idea of conservatives as the American Volk, an idea downstream of the senate and EC giving them more power than their numbers that has somehow become a quasi spiritual belief about the nature of the country

Funny, I remember when blaming the Saudis for being directly behind the 9/11 attacks on as a right wing conspiracy that made you an imperialist, islamophobic bigot. Ditto for even bringing up he misogyny and anti-LGBT policies of any Muslim country. What changed? Is it just the Trump era?

I’ve always been a relatively skeptical, anti-conspiracy theory type, but I thought exactly this as soon as I heard the ‘anti-ICE’ thing. It’s like if they found missile debris at the Pentagon in 2001 with ‘Saddam Hates the USA’ written on it

I blame Tony Stark’s Iron Man for this. Everyone became convinced that every sci-fi action character also had to be the sarcastic comic relief
for whatever reason i recently watched an episode of the most recent star trek series and i must say it's unbelievable how much the, dare i say, Soy Banter dialogue style still infects every single show and movie in existence, despite everyone hating it for the last full decade.

Kamala Harris on Mamdani: Look, as far as I'm concerned, he's the democratic nominee and he should be supported.

Here's a thread recapping all of it. 1/

Jamelle Bouie is easily one of America’s best columnists. NYT publishing his stuff means more people see it, including some influential people who otherwise might never be exposed to those arguments.

People who say he should leave are wrong. It would improve nothing, and make some things worse.

Things like this only further cement the feeling that the federal government as it stands today is a kind of occupying, alien force that is trying to force its will on an unwilling nation
Since May:

Federal district courts have ruled against Trump admin 94% of the time.

Supreme Court has sided with the Trump admin 94% of the time.

A judiciary at war with itself.

Not necessarily top tier, but not a dull moment either. Lots of later-familiar tropes and interesting science ideas crammed in a somewhat home package. Stellar effects.
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers was released 69 years ago today.

Nice effects by Ray Harryhausen!

What’s really angering and depressing me about our modern age is all the wasted potential
The US already devotes more than 40 million acres to growing corn for ethanol fuel production.

If only ~1/3 of that land were converted to solar PV, it could generate enough electricity to cover the entire country's electricity needs.

This is the only self-help advice I’ve seen that really works 😂
Best strange advice I’ve ever gotten: If you catch yourself having negative thoughts about yourself, start hearing them in Trump’s voice. You’ll immediately begin defending yourself.
