The conservative movement has turned against reality on every scientific issue of our time, from gun violence to climate change to epidemiology.

If campuses are ideologically homogenous, it's not because academia has ostracized conservatives. It's because conservatives have ostracized academia.

Let's juxtapose that my Iowa hometown canceled an African American Read-In because administrators believed it ran afoul of Trump's anti-diversity e.o. and the state's "divisive concepts" law. A few days later white supremacists freely marched in the capitol. www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/2...
Leaders: Patriot Front's hate has 'no place' in Iowa after white supremacists' march
Leaders from across the political spectrum condemned Patriot Front, after the white supremacist group marched Saturday in Des Moines' East Village.

Now that musk is saying he’s doing the DOGE stuff “because the globalists have plotted a Great Replacement in which they use government handouts to buy votes from illegal immigrants and urban blacks” maybe we don’t have to act like this is about deficits or cost cutting anymore

As a journalist who covers extremism at the local level, I think it’s a mistake to view Trump’s Napoleonic statement as solely about presidential power. Consider if it’s interpreted as a wink and a nod for any extremist to act outside the law to “save” the country as they see fit

“Today, DEI has become the new N-word; the new rightwing abstraction deployed by Republicans to conceal their anti-Black racism.”

My latest for the Guardian, in which I cite Lee Atwater, and bring lots of receipts.

Stop calling it polarisation. The world may be divided, but it’s not a “shame” when it’s a reflection of values.

When some think lying is okay and others don’t, that’s not just a divide; it’s a moral line. Certain truths should be universal. Let’s start there.

The kind of racism Trump & his ilk espouse is old-fashioned, even as it’s dressed up in modern DEI discourse.

They get close to saying it outright but haven’t yet—but make no mistake, they sincerely believe white people are biologically & intellectually superior to nonwhite people.

The thing about “patriotic education” is that if you have to lie about America to love it then you probably don’t really love it. Ultimately their objection to the flawed universalism expressed in the declaration is the idea that the flaws were bad or that the universalism should be realized.

This has become a popular metaphor on the Right and it captures their political project so precisely:

The unruly kids, that’s everyone who dares to deviate from white Christian patriarchal rule; the only way to deal with them is via coercion and violence – the Leader must punish them.
