Today is the 9th anniversary of the day Maggie stole an entire pecan pie and got drunk from all the sugar. Happy Purloined Pecan Pie Day from our family to yours!

I won't wade into the marsh in which this conversation is currently going on, but I'm happy to note that the first thing a twenty-first-century publishing entity does on receipt of a manuscript and to prepare it for eventual publication is to yank out every single double space after a period.

Telling moment: I was walking back from the rally, but a couple miles from it, carrying nothing but my gigantic American flag. An eight year old on his bike sees me with it and yells "No Kings!!" with absolute conviction.

My friends, they have lost the flag.

folks can complain about the effectiveness of scheduled orderly mass protest but to think about it another way its the closest thing we have to the opening scene of A Muppet Christmas Carol where all the muppets sing "there goes Mr. Dipshit, there goes Mr. Ass" to Scrooge and it clearly bothered him

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love & support
She loved animals & she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her”

Today's #SpacetoberChallenge: Spacecraft.

So here are a few Astronaut Vessels. Each one shows an astronaut traveling in a well-worn craft. I started painting these after a health scare, but they evolved to reflect the marks life makes on our physical and mental state over time.

Taking nothing away from her work on Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany's performance on Perry Mason is one of the greatest sustained pieces of acting I've ever seen in any medium.

The showrunners changed from S1 to S2 . . . but S1 is truly some of the best television I’ve ever seen. Looked forward to the new episode every week.
I have watched the first season of the HBO Perry Mason reboot four times. So far. (The second season was fine, but it didn't climb the heights of operatic grotesquerie of season 1, and it lacked Tatiana Maslany.)

And of course @danielg17.bsky.social's Julia is a treasure.
Everyone has a 1-2 season TV show they sorely miss and not enough people knew about that you are always praising the heavens about.

What's yours?

Angela Lansbury's curtain call for Mame was absolutely extraordinary: she swept onstage in one last new costume as the ensemble sang the title song, then she kissed each principal—even the antagonists—like old friends, and then curtsied to her company *before* bowing to the audience.

Mary Shelley doesn't get enough credit for not only anticipating the silver-spooned narcissist techbro who recklessly creates technology without thinking through the consequences, but also for knowing that said techbro would be an absolutely terrible father.

this makes me so incandescently, humorlessly furious, LLMs know how to do things like parallel structure and em-dashes bc they trained on real writers’ work without those writers’ knowledge or consent, and now those same writers are being told not to write that way bc “it makes you sound like AI”

So . . . the old subway map wasn’t to scale/proportion either, but this is ridiculous.
July 6, 2025 at 8:35 PM
I am just now realizing that the new subway map doesn’t have streets on it. You have to read the stations to have any sense of the geographical reality, and that only works if the street where you’re going has a station on it.

What the actual fuck. What a completely useless design.

Don’t forget to breathe.

Breathe in for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8. It signals safety to your nervous system and helps bring you back to centre.

No matter the situation, we need to be regulated to think, to act, to not freeze.

America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.
