At close of debate, Lords have only managed to get through one group of amendments to Assisted Dying Bill today, representing 21 amendments in total.

Meanwhile, 82 new amendments were added in last week alone.

Lords can’t debate them as fast as they’re being added - bill faces being talked out.

On the second day of debate for the Assisted Dying Bill, over nearly five hours, peers debated only 21 amendments.

Meanwhile, 82 new amendments were added in the past week!

This isn’t scrutiny, it’s sabotage.

Lord Watts says that with the number of amendments tabled, it's clear that this is about wrecking the Assisted Dying Bill, not scrutinising it.

Baroness Hayter claims the amendments proposed "are not about making the bill acceptable... It’s a way of trying to stop our discussion and proper scrutiny."

This intervention was made after nearly two hours, with only one speech by a supporter of the Bill.

The assisted dying Bill introduces far greater protections for vulnerable people than exist in the current law - Lord Pannick

MPs are increasingly worried about tactics in the Lords that are holding back the Assisted Dying Bill. Decisions on this issue should rest with elected politicians, not those using delay to avoid debate.

Thank you to @kitmalthouse.bsky.social for speaking up for the terminally ill.

Disabled people deserve the same choices as everyone else, including how they die.

Our patron Jean Eveleigh told the Committee she’s given evidence seven times to make sure disabled voices are heard in this debate.

Nearly 1,000 amendments have now been tabled to the Assisted Dying Bill in the House of Lords. Last Friday, Peers covered only seven. A small group of opponents are using this tactic to slow the progress of the Bill, and at this pace, scrutiny would take more than twenty years.

People with disabilities face additional barriers under current law.

Those unable to travel abroad are denied the same choices others can access, an inequality at the heart of the status quo. #AssistedDying

"It’s important not to be too paternalistic. The Bill is trying to provide a choice at the end of life. It’s not compulsory, it’s not an expectation, and it’s certainly not to be used as a weapon." Professor Liz Wicks, giving evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights. @tomgordonld.bsky.social

Evidence from New Zealand shows that families felt gratitude and relief when their loved ones were no longer forced into drawn-out suffering, and they no longer had to witness it. #AssistedDying
November 5, 2025 at 5:47 PM
Dr Snelling, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law at the University of Otago, told the Committee that the overwhelming feedback from patients and families in New Zealand was gratitude. Even relatives who were initially unsure often became advocates of #AssistedDying.

Evidence from New Zealand challenges claims about coercion. Disabled patients reported that relatives tended to urge them away from assisted dying rather than push them toward it. #AssistedDying

This afternoon the Lords hear from four key New Zealand experts: Dr Jeanne Snelling, Dr Jessica Young, Professor Sinead Donnelly and former MP Simon O’Connor. Their evidence will help the Committee understand how #AssistedDying works in practice and what the UK can learn.

Health Minister Stephen Kinnock told the Lords that the Assisted Dying Bill strikes the balance between 'access and safety'.

Kinnock also confirmed, ‘If Parliament gives its assent to this Bill then the Government will implement it.'

We urge the Lords to back this Bill.

Professor Chris Whitty reminds us that end-of-life choices aren’t one-size-fits-all. Some want every extra day, others want comfort and dignity for fewer days. Both choices deserve equal respect. #AssistedDying
November 5, 2025 at 3:50 PM
A powerful reminder from Professor Chris Whitty: equality demands a system that every dying person can understand, especially in their final months. Complexity should never be at the detriment of choice. #AssistedDying
November 5, 2025 at 3:33 PM
Professor Sir Chris Whitty warned the House of Lords not to pile on extra layers of regulation to the #AssistedDyingBill. He said the priority should be deciding what needs protecting and keeping the system as simple and clear as possible for dying people.
