I see the Right, in a combination of stupidity and dishonesty and self-blindness, is leaning heavily into “this happened because the Marxist subhuman terrorist scum of Left keeps escalating the rhetoric!”

Yep, no Black person was safe, free or not, North or South. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 nationalized slave catching by reducing local protections.

Every Black person had to carry proof of freedom, b/c simply skin color made them automatically suspicious, and papers didn't always protect them.
History rhymes, and we can learn from the cadence.

One problem with the idea of reserving due process for law-abiding people is that due process is how we figure out which people are law-abiding.

These folks are just terrified and incensed that so many young people aren’t bigoted assholes like them and aren’t scared of the same people they are. Talking to high school kids and seeing how many of them are chill about these issues is one of the few redeeming qualities of current American life.

It was a rule at Deadspin that if we cited, quoted, or basically even acknowledged the existence of any legal filing, that we embedded a copy of that filing in the article.

I don't know why that is not standard practice in journalism and I am skeptical of any outlet that doesn't do it.
