There is annoyance at Lam as junior whip grabbing headlines as a rising star + at "more culturally coherent" language being too obvious a "dog whistle" - mass deportations for a whiter Britain is the Powellite meaning that both critics & some champions of 3 million deportations may hear

Several Tory MPs are unhappy at language of Katie Lam, a junior whip, saying mass deportations of 2-3m+ needed to make Britain "more culturally coherent" (ie, fewer nonwhite migrants) but "not entirely" (ie,some of those she can't deport won't integrate: Muslims)

important article highlighting the continuing benefit to both mother and newborn of vaccinating pregnant women against Covid.

The US under RFK Jr just stopped recommending vax for pregnant women. The UK has withdrawn vax for pregnant women too - I think both are very stupid decisions.

🇳🇴#Norway, parliamentary election poll:

In the last Verian poll, the Labour Party (AP) of Prime Minister Støre stands in first place with 31,6 %.

This is the best Verian/Kantar poll for Labour since June 2017 and would be the best result for the party since 2009.

I get that there is an audience for this argument but I'm really not sure "we're the only party in favour of more child poverty" is going to help Badenoch out of the hole she's in.

I think it's more "You are posting in the classified section of a newspaper, where 85% of the other ads are for racism and porn".
Whole lot of people think X is "crappier Twitter because there's no moderation."

No. The algorithm is fundamentally different now. If you are not a paid account pushing right-wing propaganda, your reach is a tiny fraction of what it was. You're posting in a chatroom of your followers. Nothing more.
absolutely this

after a mass exodus from ex-Twitter, the only reason the platform hasn't died yet is because some people continue to give it credibility it no longer deserves

without those people X would be the same as Truth Social

This is an interesting seat (which may now have a by-election as Spencer has been charged with sexual assault).

Craig was pulled as a candidate due to have placed a bet against himself. Otherwise he might have won last year.

But I'd still expect Reform to win now.

The problem, and I say this as the child of immigrants, is that this country doesn’t have the jobs, infrastructure or services to absorb 750000 new migrants a year.

Let’s set aside the rhetoric & look at the state of the housing market - there aren’t enough houses for the population we have now.

On universities the white paper only reduces the graduate visa from two years to 18 months (which is a win for the DfE).

The bigger thing universities will be worrying about is this little timebomb.

Public opinion on immigration is quite mixed. They hugely dislike illegal migration and want illegals to be barred permanently from being citizens and deported, as well as criminals and reducing channel crossings.
4/ What do people actually want from the immigration system?

Clear majorities want foreign criminals deported, channel crossings stopped and those entering the UK illegally to never get citizenship.

But majority think it should be EASIER for skilled workers to come.

So what do we learn?

- Clear public think numbers too high.
- But perceptions of immigration a complex mix of those coming for work vs claiming asylum.
- Public want it to be easy for skilled workers to come
- But they also want channel crossings stopped.

Most people care about control. It means different things to different people

How far does control mean select contributors
+ how far is the priority for control to reduce?

54% Control > Reduce
31% prioritise Reduce

[Matches 'reduce a lot' 32%]
[A quarter to 3/10 will the means: reduce visas]

Labour's political coalition challenge is that - while the median Labour voter is a control + select balancer, one fifth are strong reducers (large reductions, including identifying some means) + a quarter are very liberal (say: "increase overall numbers": one way to convey 'speak up for the gains'

We asked half of public who want overall numbers down, what their priority is for reduced immigration: it is people arriving by irregular means - such as boats in Channel - for half of reducers; reducing overall numbers for a quarter of reducers. Work, study, refugees, less diversity not prioritised
