Speaks to something deeply wrong with capitalism that Lampert was allowed to annihilate the value of this company to less than nothing while still walking away with hundreds of millions in profits for himself from the saga.
Sears had more than 3,400 stores in 2005 -- then it was purchased by a hedge fund magnate.

my home state continues to embarrass me
companies are leaving Trumpland, red-as-fuck, Missouri? because of our (very low) income tax?

This kind of reasoning drives me nuts. No, the driver did not set out to kill anyone with her car that night, but she did do something known to be incredibly dangerous with consequences anyone could have expected. Obviously she didn't intend to harm another person. But she also didn't intend not to.

truly sick car-brained society
An online creator in Illinois who struck and killed a pedestrian with her car during a livestream she was hosting on TikTok was charged this week with two felonies, the police said.

The driver, who is known to her followers as Tea Tyme, was charged with two felonies in connection with the crash last month, the police in Illinois said.

the recurrent line that has always stuck out to me, "name any issue and i'll tell you how cars make the problem worse", is extremely true because once you See cars you cannot unsee them.

In less than a week, I will be sworn in as the next mayor of New York City. It was only possible because of the more than 100,000 people who volunteered on our campaign. Here’s a story about one of them, my mother.

NEW — Ignore the naysayers. Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs absolutely worked. They liberated Americans from their jobs.

(In addition to making most things more expensive.)

Trump’s economy since he imposed tariffs has created one-tenth of the jobs per month as Biden’s economy, while manufacturing has lost jobs each month.

the most consistent way to understand the Trump administration is that it's all scams

Read your policy and the exceptions from cover to cover to make sure your specific policy doesn't exclude certain things: they all will exclude criminal cases, but some will also exclude "intentional acts" and "making someone mad enough on the internet to sue you" would qualify there.

If you are civilly sued for a stupid-ass reason by someone you have made mad on the internet, such as a BS defamation suit, the insurance policy will pay your lawyers to defend you against it. It's especially important if you live in a state without a good anti-SLAPP law.

Reposting out of a response thread to remind US people: if you make people mad on the internet, it is a VERY worthwhile investment to add an umbrella policy to your homeowners' or renters' insurance. I recommend a $2m per incident minimum; we increased ours to $5m recently just in case.
This is part of why I *strongly* recommend anyone who makes assholes on the internet mad a lot should have a umbrella liability policy added to their homeowners' or renters' insurance, with a minimum coverage of $2m per incident, although we just increased ours to $5m just in case.
