New Illustration: "We Beat 'Em Before..."

Taken from a British WW2 poster, the original features a WW1 German soldier at the top. I just swapped it for the Nazi soldier it had at the bottom.

This reminds me of a favorite quote:

How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg? Four. Saying that a tail is a leg doesn't make it a leg.

Abraham Lincoln
FOX: If you cut something by 100%, the cost goes down to 0. If you cut it by 600%, the drug companies are actually paying you

LUTNICK: What he's saying is if a drug was $100 and you bring it down to $13, it's down 7 times

F: Not a 600% cut

L: But it's 700% higher price before. It's down 700% now

Again, I really wish more papers would get accustomed to the form “Trump unlawfully pretends to…” when describing things Trump says he’s doing but has no legal power to do.
Like renaming the Defense Department the "War Department," the name of the Kennedy Center has not been legally changed, because Congress has not changed it-->

I keep saying this but no one is connecting the dots. The war is to satisfy legal preconditions for mass removal *domestically* of Latinos (i.e., suddenly a lot of people are going to be “Venezuelan” for purposes of removal). This is 100% Stephen Miller…oil claim is to make grandpa go along
There is no national security logic that would impel the US to want to do regime change in Venezuela. It's simply not that important. I'm not even sure wag the dog is the right metaphor for what's happening here. Seems like an insane misallocation of US national security assets and attention.
Trump: "Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled ... It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before — Until such time as they return to the USA all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us."

When a military helicopter collided with a plane at Ronald Reagan National Airport in January and killed 67 people, Trump absurdly blamed DEI.

Months later, the administration is eating its words, as it takes full responsibility for the crash and may end up paying for damages. trib.al/VCIZGVL

Authors, remember that you CAN insist on human translation for your foreign-language editions and have it written into your contracts. You can no longer just assume you're going to get a human to work on the book whose every word you wrote with intent.

Remember how I said I have it written into my foreign-language contracts that my work has to be translated by an actual human? This shit is why.

Those book translations are gonna suck. They'll save money putting out books that are going to be painful to read. That's not a great long-term strategy.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin

This article is most useful in highlighting the dismissals of such warnings. Big question is why? Normalcy bias? Not being vulnerable?

I guess that I’m making a Weberian Bad thread.

As Don writes in the piece below, these moves to tie military pay directly to Presidential benevolence are illegal and dangerous.

Weber was clear on distinguishing rule-based authority from personalist authority. And Trump keeps crossing the line.
Trump just announced he will be giving members of the military a $1776 bonus. So re-upping this shutdown piece about the dangers of a the leader of a personalist regime presenting himself as the paymaster of the armed forces.

This, too, is Weberian bad. Fundamentals-of-modern-state bad.

The President does not have the constitutional authority to create a new spending program.

And directing public funds to a group specifically because he believes they “love” him is textbook patrimonialism.
Trump: "I'm delighted to announce this afternoon that the US will be taking a small portion of the hundreds of billions of dollars we receive in tariffs ... and we're going to be giving and providing it to the farmers in economic assistance. We love our farmers. The farmers like me ... $12 billion"

1) This sounds like a violation of the Anti-Deficiency Act.

2) Every federal worker suffered over the past 7 weeks. But if we pay some groups faster than others, and if one if the ruler’s chief courtiers delivers the money like a personal gift…it’s bad.

Like, basic-modern-state bad. Weberian bad.

A big reason this is bad is it could let the Future Forward Super PAC escape any accountability for the 2024 loss. It had hundreds of millions of dollars in donor money, and the DNC report was reportedly going to fault them. Now this will remain undisclosed:
