I enjoy Springsteen's music, though I'm not a ginormous fan. Even so, I really enjoyed this movie--both as a biopic about Springsteen as well as a film about what the creative process can and cannot do. I enjoyed reading this take on it.
"Suffice it to say that the decade’s media landscape has been particularly Bruce-minded. Why all of this now?" @grantsharpies.bsky.social offers a personal account of the Boss’s career and legacy: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/springtime-for-springnuts/

I’m just curious—do K-12 classrooms have pencil sharpeners now? Do students use such pencils, or just mechanical pencils?

Taught Flannery O’Connor’s “A Late Encounter with the Enemy” a few weeks back, and there is a lot packed in this story, especially calling out the Lost Cause narrative.

The Lost Cause in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Late Encounter with the Enemy”
When I started thinking about my American literary survey course this semester, I knew I wanted to have a story by Flannery O’Connor…

40 years ago we’d have congressional hearings falsely accusing metal bands of putting backwards messages in their songs that told kids to kill themselves & now we have a planet-killing chatbot that’s all like “bet you won’t commit suicide chickenshit bitch” & the government is like here’s $5 billion

The NYT piece is asinine. I admit, though, that I’m enjoying the many 9 to 5 references that it has inspired.

Don't forget that Zohran Mamdani spent his entire campaign standing proudly beside the trans community. He went to trans rights rallies just to show support. He proudly waved trans rights flags without hesitation. He refused to back down in support of trans rights. That makes me happy.

Young people in NYC absolutely showed out and there should be 1000 articles and profiles about this. Because we have had to put up with 1000 MAGA diner stories for years now.

The subway on Halloween night is one of the greatest things about NYC.
The music cuts off awkwardly before the end, but this is an incredible NYC Halloween costume compilation.

For my 15th birthday in 1989, I got this Indigo Girls album, REM’s Green (after seeing them in concert), & Robyn Hitchcock’s Queen Elvis. I still listen to them often.
Post a perfect album from 1989, a perfect music year.
(Hard to narrow down to four)

1989 really was an amazing year for music. If you don’t know this Phranc album, you should.

From my before bed book stack, I just finished The Land of Sweet Forever (so good!) & am fixing to start reading Doll Parts—which is making my internal jukebox even more chaotic than usual.

And now I've reached the part of the day where I just want to listen to Big Star's Thirteen on repeat. So I shall. Yay for headphones!

I'm feeling cranky today, so I put on some Emmylou Harris music, which calms me down. And I remembered the time in high school that I blew out one of the speakers on my parents' stereo, blasting Emmylou Harris too loudly. I have always been a badass :)

I’m so glad that I learned about this novel from @scalzi.com (that @markensley.bsky.social pointed me to). I’m 60 pages in, & I’m fascinated by magic in this world.
And, as an English prof myself, I’m also fascinated by how @courtney-floyd.com has brought so much of academia & teaching to this world
It’s book day!!!

HIGHER MAGIC is out in the US today! UK readers, it’s coming your way November 20th. I’m so excited for you all to meet Bartleby, Anne, and the rest of the gang. ✨

@robynhitchcock.bsky.social Have you read The Life of Violet, the new Virginia Woolf, yet? It strikes me as humor that you would enjoy.

I sent myself a reminder about prepping for an upcoming class: “get wise blood.”
And now I’m imagining several ways that this message might be misunderstood.
