Meet my newest foster guests, Milo and Pumpkin! When their human passed away, they found themselves with an appointment to be euthanized because they had nowhere to go. Fortunately, their veterinarian called our rescue. I look forward to sharing more as I get to know them! #cats

Hey #socialscience #sociology #economics #politicalscience folks! I’ve been given the opportunity to return to my roots and teach diploma level intro to social science. Thinking back, what were the memorable classes, lessons, activities, etc. that made you fall in love with the field?

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.

THIS! I keep hearing we are doing a disservice if we don’t teach AI skills. But even setting aside my personal feelings about it, I am not remotely qualified to teach AI proficiency within my field. It’s not my area, it’s not what I signed up for & this insistence is the real disservice to students.
As Justin Reich wrote recently at the Chronicle, we don't know how to "teach AI." This is a complicated problem that it will take years and lots of experimenting to understand. Past failures are myriad and initiatives like Purdue's are falling into the same traps. www.chronicle.com/article/stop...

Colleges are racing to make students ‘fluent.’ One problem: No one knows what that means.

Canada, let’s get this done!
Canadian citizens and residents, there's a new official parliamentary petition raising the issue of electoral reform and proportional representation. Signing is a direct means of meaningful action toward improving our democracy, and it just takes a moment to do. www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en...

This is a complex problem with plenty of blame to go around. Chronic underfunding of higher ed in Ontario is a huge part of it. There have been bailouts in plenty of industries shedding jobs. 10k+ HE jobs eliminated this year - why no help here?

In my experience, when I see AI used to bypass the learning to get to the output, I see people who never felt the horrible, wonderful rumble of struggling with difficult learning, followed by the sweet release of comprehension and the explosive victory of a new idea or question.

"Abortion is about bodily autonomy, and the person who is pregnant must have more rights than the fetus; otherwise, being pregnant strips you of personhood"
Canada, abortion rights are under attack. The forced birthers are using the same strategies that worked in the U.S. open.substack.com/pub/vajenda/...

Energy is a huge part of the Albertan cultural identity, but what are they getting out of it? Instead of bending over backwards to kiss the asses of foreign investors, the provincial and federal govts could be investing in making Alberta a global leader in renewables and keeping the money at home.

Life pro tip: you can buy yourself a birthday cake any time you want. You can even get them to write your name (or nearly anything) on it. No one cards you for this.

Hello, nice to meet you. No, I would not like to create an account to read this random article from your site that someone shared on BlueSky. Yes, I like that person. Yes, I see that it is free. Still no, thank you so much. Okay, bye.
