Fascinated to watch a whole cohort of female academics get let down by the industry, only to channel their niche interests into their own sub-genre of Romantasy*

*Brilliant female heroine, an expert in her field, is swept off her feet by a love interest who is *fascinated* by her and her intellect.

Thought of changing my display name to Smidgeon but not sure if the sudden change would throw off my fellow face-blind ND's (like me).

Academia cut me loose just in time for the holidays so I'm launching my consultancy in 2026, in running games & mentoring teens in TTRPG's as a freelance DM/worldbuilder.

Fees are mostly to cover the cost of snacks.
EVERYONE GET MORE PASSIONATE AND SELF INDULGENT ABOUT CREATIVITY AND BEING HUMAN NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Starting to think that perhaps not working in academia next year is a blessing in disguise
this hellscape grows hotter every day
Grading and googling hallucinated citations, as one does nowadays, and now that LLMs have been around for a while, I've discovered new horrors: hallucinated journals are now appearing in Google Scholar with dozens of citations bc so many people are citing these fake things

One of my top 3 Doctors, for both Aesthetic(tm) and the type of Shenanigans he got up to with his companion, Ace.

Both of them barely kept each other's chaos contained. Just the thinnest veneer of 'well, we SHOULDN'T solve every issue with an explosion...' to keep the plot fresh.

As a Recovered Potterhead(tm), seeing HP stuff shoved into every sale, every store, and every tacky merchandising opportunity is really offputting. 8-year-old me would have been THRILLED with some of this stuff, but seeing it as a parent now feels...eugh.

Like, it's *everywhere*.

See if computers can't even correctly estimate the workflow throughput of a call centre what hope do they have for more complex tasks.

The temporary cure that pregnancy had for my lactose intolerance lasted 1 week after delivering my son.

Farewell, carefree consumption of dairy. You will be missed. 🥺

For anyone who actually games/uses PCs for powerful grunt-work, $1k-ish is a very normal (decent! even) price for a brand-new gaming machine.

Contextually, I got mine for gaming + research data processing (good for both) for a STEAL at $800, pre-COVID. Components have gotten more expensive since.
It's so weird seeing people crash out over the potential price of the Steam Machine. To me it was pretty obvious it'd be priced like a PC, not like a Console.
Hell, I'd be shocked if the next generations of consoles won't be priced like a PC.

The country that gets there first, and begins to export, will winnn~
This a big deal: "China’s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"

China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

World’s biggest polluter on track to hit peak emissions target early but miss goal for cutting carbon intensity

A rare interview with the creators of the always-funny, always-brilliant, and *usually*-sexy—or occasionally anti-sexy—OGLAF!

Cooper has kept a low profile over the years, but is legitimately one of the very best artists in comics today. Read OGLAF if you're old enough to drive!
Talking Oglaf with Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne: 'We'd stay up all night drawing stuff to make each other laugh' - The Comics Journal
Other than some time off every year for Christmas, Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne have delivered a new Oglaf comic, skewering fantasy tropes with absolutely not safe for work humor, every week since 2008...

My teachers scoffed at me in high school for reading Dickens and now I wonder if perhaps Dickens should have been in the curriculum instead of, say, My Brilliant Career.
Some of you have this weird need to relitigate Victorian ethics. People just died. A lot.
I just saw someone say that people back in the day (1800s) didn’t pay for healthcare and (1) y’all there was a lot of advertising for health products!

It was just that without any real regulation, nobody knew what worked.

Being an Autistic parent is protective against earworms like Soda Pop driving me insane.

The NT parents at my kid's daycare are slowly losing their sanity during the KPOP Demon Hunters Era and I'm just vibing with the echolalia of 'you're my soda pop, my little soda pop *POP*'

I perfected the creepy 'retail face' at about 14 because it lowered the % of customers getting pissy with me over 'quality of service'. It burned me out emotionally but I made sure my smile never quite reached my eyes, my voice a little *too* chipper for 8am.

As a customer I hate being greeted.
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.

They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."

🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.
Target is now requiring its employees to smile more
As the holiday season fast approaches, Target is urging its employees to add a little more “jolly” to their work routine.

This site, like my use of almost all social media, is to provide the world with the thoughts too short for a full diary entry/blog post but too Important(tm) to simply mention to my loved ones.

What can I SAYYYYY except YA WELCOME~
labeler here.

important to note that the "posts a lot" thresholds are obviously way too low and unnecessarily judgmental, don't use those.

Omg 1 week before delivering this giant baby is the *perfect* time for my nausea to get worse, AND the council to decide to pour fresh asphalt outside my toddler's daycare.

Brilliant move, universe. Simply wonderful.
